MidReal Story

The Summer I Spent With My Dad

Scenario:It's very crowded here. Me and my five siblings and mom are in one single car on the way to the airport. Recently, my parents got divorced, and we were on our way to our dads house for the summer. He moved all the way to Canada, and my mom lives in Poland with us for the school year. Me and my siblings get to sit in business class since there's so many of us, and if we all had to sit together in economy we'd probably keep arguing and screaming. My name is Ava and I'm 12. Next year I'm going to middle school. My five siblings are Ria, Josh, Sarah, Josie and Collin. They're all older except for Ria and Josie. Ria is 4 and Josie is also 12 like me. Josie is very spoiled and bratty, and I know she's gonna make our dads new girlfriend take her shopping. I don't like dads new girlfriend, and I'm definitely not looking forward to spending the summer with her. She's just like Josie, always wasting money and trying to be the center of attention for our dad. I heard there were polar bear tours in Canada. I like polar bears, but penguins and turtles are my favorite animals. We're getting on the plane, and I can't wait to have a break from most of my siblings. I'm sitting with Sarah. She's my favorite sibling. She loves art and makes a lot of art for me, my siblings, our parents, and her friends. She's supposed to go to college next year, so this might be the last summer I see her. I'll miss her when she goes to college, but I'm also really happy that she's going because she's going to take art. She's really good at art and can make anything from hyper realistic to cartoon doodles. She made me a picture for my birthday last month. It was a picture of a realistic penguin on an iceberg. The flight took almost 11 hours, and we just got our food. I ordered a ham and cheese sandwich and Sarah got the same. We talked for a long time that i didn't realize that almost an hour had gone by.

Ugh.
It's so crowded in this car.
There are seven kids in my family, and my mom and I are going to the airport in one single car.
Me and my five siblings are going to see our dad who lives all the way in Canada while our mom lives with us in Poland for the school year.
Recently, our parents got a divorce, so we get to go to our dads house for the summer since there are so many of us.
If we had to sit in economy, then we would probably keep arguing and screaming since there's so many of us.
Thankfully, me and my siblings get to sit in business class since there's so many of us.
My name is Ava, and I'm 12.
Next year, I'm going to go to middle school which scares me a lot since I hear all these scary rumors about the girls getting bullied and put in lockers.
All my siblings are older than me except for Ria who is four and Josie who is also 12 just like me.
I'm not really looking forward to spending the summer with my dad's new girlfriend.
She's just like Josie—spoiled and bratty.
I know Josie is gonna make their dad's girlfriend take her shopping.
Josie is really spoiled and bratty.
The Summer I Spent With My Dad
I shift uncomfortably in my business class seat.
Sarah is sitting next to me, and she's sketching in her sketchbook.
The flight attendant comes by with drinks, and I watch Josie two rows ahead of us.
She's already planning her shopping spree.
She keeps turning around, making faces at me and showing off her phone with pictures of expensive dresses.
The Summer I Spent With My Dad
I try to focus on Sarah's drawing, but Josie gets up and stumbles down the aisle to our row.
She grabs my armrest, leaning in close with that smug smile she always wears when she's about to brag.
My stomach tightens as she starts whispering about all the things she's going to convince Dad's girlfriend to buy her.
Josie leans in closer, jabbing her finger at her phone screen.
"See this sparkly purple dress? I'm going to make her buy it for me. And then there's these matching shoes..."
I shift away from her, pressing myself practically against Sarah's shoulder.
Josie follows, her voice growing louder as she talks about all the shopping trips she's going to drag Dad's girlfriend on.
The flight attendant walks by, looking concerned, and Josie straightens up.
The Summer I Spent With My Dad
For a moment, she hovers in the aisle, talking about all the designer handbags and jewelry she's going to convince Dad's girlfriend to buy her.
My hand slides into my backpack under the seat, fishing around for my headphones that I know are tangled up inside.
I put them on, drowning out Josie's voice with my favorite music.
