Write a story about a black girl who lost her mother but gain strength to rise above to become a community inspiration
I was just a girl when I lost my mother.
A black girl.
And I tell you that in case you wonder how I might react when I hear someone mention the word "mama."
I say it because some people think all little black girls are the same.
But they are not.
I am different.
I am a twelve-year-old girl who lost her mama in a car accident one Sunday morning.
It happened on our way home from church.
A tree took her from me.
It was as if the universe had peaked inside our car and snatched away the only person who had peeked into my soul and seen exactly what it needed.
My mother’s death gave me a new name: strong one.
It made me mature so no one would think of me as a baby.
It gave me a mission to make sure no one around me cried themselves to sleep the rest of their nights.
And most importantly, it gave me a reason to work hard to become the woman my mother always envisioned me to be.
I still remember what she told me the day before she left: "Ava, the strength of a person is not determined by how much they can lift or the distance they can cover. It is determined by how well they get back up after they fall. Never give up on yourself or your dreams."
