The story follows a woman named Mia who sent her love interest, Kai, to prison when she was fifteen, and eight years later, he shows up at her doorstep seeking revenge.
Pain seared through me, and I shot up in bed, drenched in sweat.
As I gasped for breath, the nightmare faded away, leaving a feeling of unease in the pit of my stomach.
The memories may have been pushed to the back of my mind, but they were never truly gone.
When I opened my eyes, the soft pink walls of my bedroom greeted me, and I visibly relaxed.
The floodlight illuminating my front porch hadnāt been turned on yet, but it wouldnāt be long before the sun came up, and I had to get ready for work.
I buried my face in my hands, trying to push away the memories that had haunted me for years.
Eight years ago, I sent Kai to prison.
And last night, he showed up on my doorstep.
A sob tore through me, and I tried to muffle it against my palms.
When I couldnāt take it any longer, I collapsed onto my side and cried myself back to sleep.
I woke a short time later when I felt someone shake me awake.
āMia?ā Sarahās voice cut through the fog in my head.
I sat up and blinked at her.
The sky outside was still gray, which meant we had at least an hour before we needed to meet our first client.
Sarah sat on the bed beside me with a worried expression on her face.
That wasnāt a dream.ā The tears started again as I nodded.
Sarah wrapped her arms around me and pulled me into a hug.
āIām sorry I didnāt wake you sooner.ā Sheād already changed into her workout clothesāa pair of black leggings and a blue tank top with the logo of our personal training business on the front.
She smelled like peppermint soap from her shower earlier and was warm and soft against me.
āShh.ā She rubbed my back as I cried.
āI donāt think I slept very well either.ā
I sniffled and sat back, wiping my cheeks with the backs of my hands.
āDid I wake you?ā
She shook her head.
āI was already awake.ā She gave me a small smile as she brushed away a stray hair from my face.
āI wanted to be here in case you needed me.ā
I nodded and allowed myself to lean against her shoulder for a moment.
I wasnāt sure how much more of this I could take.
Sarah had been so amazing since sheād found out about Kaiās return last night, but my anxiety was already through the roof, and it wasnāt even seven in the morning yet.
āDo you want me to stay home today?ā
she asked quietly after a moment.
I shook my head.
āNo.ā My voice was hoarse from crying all night, but the damage had already been done.
There was nothing else anyone could do to make it worse than it already was, even if it meant seeing Kai again today or tomorrow or the next day.
The sooner he got what he wanted from me, the sooner he would leave for good, right?
