"Mom, can I ask you something?"
I clip the last of my long hair up and spray it with hairspray before turning to my son, who is sitting on the couch watching me get ready to go out.
"Of course you can, baby boy."
I lean over and give him a kiss on the forehead.
"What’s up?"
"Mommie, can you please get your car stuck in the mud tonight when you leave?"
I stop dead in my tracks and turn to him with a smile on my face.
"You want to see that happen?"
I ask, and he nods his head.
"Yes, please."
I laugh and shake my head.
"Well, I’ll try my best."
I finish getting ready while he watches me with a huge smile on his face.
I spray my perfume, pick up my clutch, and throw my stilettos on before grabbing my keys and heading out the door with him right behind me.
"You know that’s not going to be easy, right? The car has four-wheel drive."
I tell him as we make our way down the steps off the second-story porch.
"I know, but I wish it can happen," he says, looking up at me with hopeful eyes.
I ruffle his hair and give him a wink.
"We’ll see what we can do."
When we reach the bottom of the steps, I stop and turn to him.
"I love you, baby boy."
I kiss him on the head.
"I love you too, Mommy," he says, bouncing up and down excitedly as he watches me walk over to my car.
The muddy field is right next to our house, and it’s dark now.
It’s been raining for days, so the field is soft and muddy.
My stilettos sink in a little as I make my way to my car.
I stop at my car door and turn around, looking at the muddy field.
My keys dangle from my hand as I look down at my expensive dress.
This seemed like a fun idea when he first asked, but now I’m not so sure.
I open the car door and slide into the driver’s seat as Caleb watches from the porch.
He has his hands clasped together in front of him, hoping I will get stuck.
I put my key in the ignition and grip the steering wheel tightly with one hand while I place my other foot on the gas pedal.
"Mom, you know why I want you to get stuck, right?" Caleb calls out, his voice carrying a hint of urgency.
I pause, my hand hovering over the ignition, and look back at him.
"Why, sweetheart?" I ask gently, sensing there's more to this than just a playful wish.
I turn back to face Caleb, my hand still on the key.
His expression has shifted from excitement to something more serious, making my stomach tighten.
The porch light casts shadows across his face as he stands there, fidgeting with the hem of his t-shirt.
I step out of the car, my heels sinking slightly into the gravel driveway.
"What do you mean, honey?" I ask, trying to keep my voice light.
He won't meet my eyes now, staring instead at my shoes.
The silence stretches between us, broken only by the chirp of evening crickets.
"Because if you get stuck, you'll have to come back inside and stay with me," he finally admits, his voice barely above a whisper.
I feel a pang in my chest, realizing how much he's been missing me lately.
"Oh, sweetheart, I didn't know you felt that way," I say softly, kneeling down to his level.
