Cain Diaz Roderick

Mr. Sikowitz
understanding, and nurturing. Mr Sikowitz provides guidance to both Jade West and Ryan Aaron West as they navigate their talents amidst personal challenges.
It's been 16 years since I've been to Hollywood Arts.
Everything is still the same here.
The smell of the hallway, the shimmering lights of the lockers.
I can't believe it's been 16 years since I've stepped foot into this school.
Hollywood Arts has a new teacher, Mr. Sikowitz is retiring and a new teacher will be taking his place.
However, Sikowitz will be the teacher's aide.
The new teacher arrived today and everything seemed fine until...
Jade West: Hey Tori!
Tori Vega: Hey Jade!
Are you coming to class?
Jade West: Yeah, I'll catch up with you guys later.
I need to take care of something.
Tori Vega: Ok, no problem.
Jade had seen her autistic brother for the first time in 14 years.
She remembered everything about him and how he stood by her throughout the years and supported her talents in creative writing.
Jade West: Hey there, are you ok?
Ryan Aaron West: Yeah... thanks for helping me out.
Jade West: You're welcome.
Ryan Aaron West: My name is Ryan Aaron West, and you are?
Jade West: I'm Jade West, nice to meet you.
Ryan Aaron West: Nice to meet you too, Jade.
Jade West: So what happened to you?
Ryan Aaron West: Some kids were bullying me and they pushed me to the ground.
Jade West: Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.
Ryan Aaron West: It's ok, it happens sometimes.
I trail behind Jade and Ryan as they head toward the nurse's office.
I keep a discreet distance, not wanting to be seen.
Through the hallway windows, I watch Jade carefully push Ryan's wheelchair while talking softly to him.
She stops at the water fountain and helps him take a drink.
When they reach the nurse's office, I peek through the door crack as Jade helps Ryan onto the examination table, supporting his paralyzed legs.
The nurse checks his bruises while Jade holds his hand, speaking words of encouragement.
Ryan winces as the nurse applies antiseptic, but manages a weak smile at Jade.
After the nurse finishes, Jade wheels Ryan to a quiet corner of the courtyard where students usually eat lunch.
She parks his wheelchair next to a bench and sits beside him.
Ryan nervously fidgets with the bandage on his arm.
I take a deep breath and reach into my bag, pulling out my old script for "Well Wishes" - the play he mentioned supporting years ago.
As I show him the worn pages, his eyes light up with recognition.
He reaches for the script with trembling hands, carefully turning each page while reciting lines he somehow remembers.
I settle onto the bench next to him, watching as he continues turning the worn pages.
His voice grows stronger with each line he remembers, and I find myself mouthing the words alongside him.
When we reach the climactic well scene, I join in speaking the daughter's part while he reads the father's lines.
Our voices blend together in the quiet courtyard, bringing the story to life just as it did years ago.
Ryan's hands steady as we near the final scene, and he carefully closes the script before placing it back in my hands.
I lean forward on the bench, watching his face closely as I propose performing "Well Wishes" during tomorrow's lunch period.
His fingers tighten on the wheelchair armrests, but his eyes light up with interest.
"We can use the small stage in the cafeteria," I suggest.
"It'll be a simple performance, just the two of us reading key scenes. We can keep it short and sweet."
Ryan hesitates, mentioning his wheelchair might get in the way.
I pull out a notebook and sketch a quick staging plan showing how we can incorporate his limited mobility into the performance.
He studies my rough drawings, then slowly nods.
"Alright, but only if you promise not to go easy on me," Ryan says, a hint of determination in his voice.
Jade smiles, "I wouldn't dream of it; you're still the best scene partner I've ever had."
Ryan chuckles softly, "Then let's give them a show they'll never forget."
As the bell rings, signaling the end of lunch, Jade wheels Ryan back to the nurse's office.
She helps him into bed and hands him a glass of water before leaving.
Ryan lies in bed, his mind racing with excitement about the upcoming performance.
He can't wait to get back on stage and bring "Well Wishes" to life once again.
The next day, Jade and Ryan meet in the empty Black Box Theater after most students have left for the day.
Under the dim work lights, they run through "Well Wishes" scene by scene, with Ryan reading from his lap while Jade paces the stage around him.
Ryan's delivery grows stronger with each run-through, but Jade notices his hands trembling more as fatigue sets in.
When he stumbles over a crucial monologue for the third time, Jade grabs two water bottles from her bag and calls for a break.
Ryan protests, determined to nail the scene, but Jade insists he rest and rehydrate.
She pulls a chair beside his wheelchair and divides the script into three manageable chunks, marking natural break points with sticky notes.
Ryan looks at her incredulously, "You want to break it up into sections? That'll slow us down!"
Jade shrugs, "Let's see. I'll perform the opening scene where the daughter discovers the well."
She begins speaking Jade's lines, her voice echoing in the empty theater.
Ryan watches intently, his hands stilling as she reaches the climax of the scene.
When she finishes, he reads his father's response with renewed focus and clarity.
His delivery is stronger now that he's not pushing through the entire script at once.
They work through the first section three times, taking water breaks between each run.
As Ryan's hands steady, Jade suggests they call it a day and tackle the next segment tomorrow after he's rested.
Ryan nods reluctantly, his hands still trembling but less than before.
Jade helps him into bed in the nurse's office, then heads home to work on her own lines.
The next day, Ryan is back in the Black Box Theater, ready to tackle the next scene.
Jade hands him his pages, but he hesitates, his hands shaking more than usual.
He grips the script tightly, determination in his eyes.
But after a few seconds, he drops it, unable to hold it steady.
Jade picks up the fallen pages and sets them aside.
"We're done for today," she says firmly, though her heart aches seeing his frustrated expression.
Ryan tries to grab the script back, his wheelchair rolling forward slightly.
"I can do this, Jade," he pleads, his voice breaking.
Jade kneels beside him, placing a hand over his trembling hands.
He flinches but doesn't pull away.
She keeps her touch light and steady, speaking softly to calm him.
"I know you can. But today, you can't. And that's okay. Sometimes, it's okay to not be perfect."
Ryan's shoulders slump, and his hands stop shaking.
Jade squeezes his hand reassuringly.
"When I first came to Hollywood Arts, I bombed my audition," she confesses.
"I ran off stage in tears. But the next day, I came back and nailed it."
Ryan looks at her curiously.
"Really?"
She pulls out her phone and finds an old video of the disastrous audition on her camera roll.
When she shows it to Ryan, he cracks a small smile at her expense.
His hands finally still, Jade stands up and pats him on the shoulder.
"We'll try again tomorrow. Just one more scene."
Ryan nods, a small smile forming.
"Thanks, Jade. I guess I needed that reminder."
Jade grins back, "Anytime. Now, let's get you some rest."
