It felt like a mild earthquake, jolting me awake several hours before my 8:30am audition.
I sat up and rubbed my eyes, trying to figure out what in the world had just happened, but the only thing that came to mind was excitement.
It was finally here!
The day Iâd been dreaming about for months!
The day of my singing competition audition!
I knew I wouldnât be able to fall back asleep after that, so I got up and started my day.
It was a few minutes past five in the morning, but I was so excited and nervous that I jumped out of bed with more energy than I had for school on any other day.
I was ready in no time, and so I grabbed my phone and spent a little time on social media while I waited for my breakfast to settle.
Once that was over, I got to work.
I showered and took my time to make sure that I was wide awake before I started on my hair and makeup.
My hair was the first thing that I worked on, curling my long brown hair into loose ringlets before I brushed them out so they were soft and wavy.
Makeup was next and it took me nearly an hour to perfect it.
I wanted it to be natural, but also noticeable enough that the people at the competition would be able to tell just how much effort I had put into it.
The last thing I wanted was for them to think that I had just rolled out of bed and showed up in whatever clothes were closest.
By the time my face looked the way that I wanted it to, it was seven oâclock and I decided that it was finally time to get dressed.
My dress was a little black number with white floral patterns all over it, and it fell to just above my knee.
The modest length covered up all of my most unattractive bruises, while still showing off plenty of skin.
It was tight enough around my chest that you could see the outline of my bra underneath it, but not so tight that it made me feel uncomfortable.
It also had a halter neckline, which meant that there was no fabric in between the straps of my backpack, which would have been a big problem for me.
I was wearing my favorite pair of red high heels with it, and I thought that they made the perfect combination.
Once I was dressed, I grabbed my guitar case and the backpack that had all of my music inside it, and headed back to the living room to set everything up.
I made sure to go through my song at least a few times before I decided that I was happy with how it sounded.
Iâd chosen to sing âFighterâ by Christina Aguilera for the competition, because I thought that it would really show off what I could do.
But mostly I had chosen it for the message.
The lyrics spoke to me on a personal level and I knew that they would help me get through this day.
And that was how I went from being asleep in my bed to wide awake and full of energy in just under three hours.
By the time I was ready to leave for the day, I was feeling good about my song choice, my hair looked perfect, my makeup was flawless, and I was even wearing exactly what I had wanted to wear.
Iâd eaten some toast along with some fruit for breakfast so that I would have plenty of fuel to get me through the day.
As I stood up to grab my guitar and backpack so that I could get going, I happened to look over at Alex and realized that he was sitting on the couch with a cup of tea and a plate of toast with jam in front of him.
âHey,â I said with a smile.
âDid you just wake up?â
âWhy didnât you say anything?â
âI was about to get up and come bug you.â
âWell, I had to make sure that you had a good breakfast before the big day,â he said with a smile.
He took a sip of his tea and set the cup down before he grabbed one of the pieces of toast and brought it to his mouth.
And then he did something that almost made me cry.
He held out his hand and offered me the final piece of toast on the plate.
Iâm so lucky to have you as my best friend,â I said as I took the piece of toast from him and bit into it.
âYou take care of me in ways that nobody else does.â
âYouâre going to do great today,â he said with a smile.
âI know that youâve been working really hard on your song and your voice.
Youâre so talented and you have such an amazing voice.
I know that youâre going to make it through to the next round of the competition and then youâll have the chance to really show off your skills.
And as soon as you do, everyone is going to know how amazing you are.â
I was so grateful to have someone like Alex in my life.
He was always there for me and he always knew exactly what to say to make me feel better.
The nerves were starting to get to me as we got closer to the time of the competition.
I knew that I was going to have to leave right away if I wanted to make it there in time.
It was only a short walk from my apartment, but it would take me a little while to register and get things set up before my audition.
âThanks for being here for me today,â I said with a smile.
âI donât know what I would do without you.â
âOf course Iâm here for you.
I wouldnât dream of missing this.â
This is going to be the first step in the rest of my life.
I just know it.â
âYouâve got this,â he said with a smile.
I donât think that I would ever be able to thank Alex enough for everything he did for me.
He was always there for me when nobody else was, and he was the one person who had never given up on me.
I couldnât imagine being here without him.
I took a deep breath and walked over to the door, pausing for a moment before I opened it and stepped outside.
The competition was being held in a large hall in the middle of downtown, and as soon as I stepped inside, it was clear that this was going to be a huge event.
There were hundreds of people buzzing around; some contestants were talking to each other nervously, others seemed like they were still trying to wake up after being up all night rehearsing.
I went over to the registration booth and signed in before they assigned me a number.
Then they told me where my audition was going to take place and sent me over in the right direction.
By the time I got there, my number was already up on the board with a whole bunch of other numbers around it.
