I was born in Jerusalem, but ever since I completed my military service I’ve lived in Tel Aviv.
I like it here.
It’s a different type of city, less holy and more real.
I live alone in a small apartment I rented in one of the quieter neighborhoods.
I like being alone, and after the family home I grew up in, the silence is a welcome change.
My name is Gal Gador.
I’m thirty years old, and I work as an actress.
It’s not a bad life I have, even if it’s not a very exciting one.
But all of that changed this morning.
It started like any other day.
I woke up, got dressed, and headed out to my car.

The sun was already high in the sky, and it glinted off the metal of my car as I approached it.
I raised a hand to shield my eyes from the glare, reaching out with the other to open the door.
"Gal Gador!"
The voice was sharp and commanding, and it startled me so much that I jumped back from the car.
I turned to see Officer Eitan Shavit stepping forward, his SWAT team flanking him.
They were all dressed in black, their faces set in stern lines.
I didn’t recognize any of them except for Eitan, but then, I’d only met him once before.
He was the brother of Rami Shavit, a friend of mine from work.
His eyes met mine for a moment, and I saw a flicker of recognition there before he masked it.
"You’re under arrest," he said. I stared at him, my mind racing to understand what was happening.
I’d never been arrested before.
I’d never even gotten a traffic ticket.

Why would they be arresting me now?
I glanced around at the rest of the team, but none of them gave me any clues.
Their faces were blank and unhelpful.
Eitan’s eyes were still on me, though, and I could see something there that looked almost like sympathy.
"Please step away from the vehicle," he said.
I nodded, still feeling stunned, and moved back several steps.
My hands were shaking just a little, and I raised them slightly in surrender.
I didn’t know what to do or say.
Eitan’s team moved forward to surround me, and I felt a surge of fear at being trapped by all these heavily armed men. "Gal."
Rami’s voice came from behind them, and I turned to see him pushing his way through the group.
He gave me a reassuring nod as he reached my side.
"It’s okay," he said softly.
"I’m sorry about this."
"What’s going on?"
I asked him, but he just shook his head slightly.
"Gal, there's been a mistake," Rami whispered urgently, glancing nervously at Eitan.
"They think you're involved in something serious, but I know you’re not."
Eitan stepped closer, his voice low and firm, "We need to talk about your connection to the missing artifacts from the museum."

I felt a jolt of surprise at his words, and I felt my eyes widening.
Artifacts?
What was he talking about?
I’d never been involved in anything like that.
I didn’t even know what artifacts he was referring to.
"Gal Gador, you have the right to remain silent," Eitan continued, pulling out a pair of handcuffs from his belt.
"Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed to you."
He reached forward and closed the cuffs around my wrists, the cold metal biting into my skin.
I winced at the feeling of being trapped, and Eitan gave me a firm nod before turning me toward the police van parked behind him.
Rami trailed behind us, his usual humor replaced by a tense silence.
"This is a mistake," he muttered under his breath as we walked.
Eitan glanced back at him, giving him a slight nod, but he didn’t say anything. The pavement was uneven under my feet, and I stumbled slightly as we walked.

Eitan’s hand came out to steady me, his grip firm but gentle.
I glanced up at him, trying to read his expression, but it was blank and unhelpful.
I had so many questions I wanted to ask him—what artifacts were they talking about?
Why did they think I was involved?
But before I could open my mouth to ask any of them, Eitan raised a warning finger in front of my face.
"Trust no one," he whispered, his eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that sent a chill down my spine.
