I always felt like something was missing, that something was calling to me deep inside my soul.
That something was Alaska.
Moving there on my 21st birthday felt like destiny, as though it was what I had been waiting for my whole life.
When I awoke the next morning, I felt different.
It was as though something had shifted inside of me.
I felt powerful, like I could take on anything the world threw at me.
Little did I know, that power was more literal than I could have ever imagined.
Becoming the snow witch I was born to be was just as inevitable as moving to Alaska.
It turned out that the thing calling to me wasn’t just a place at all, but my destiny and the power that resided deep inside of me.
How far would I go to protect this land and the creatures in it?
As it turned out, pretty damn far.
Join Rory on her journey as she finds herself in the last frontier of America.
A snow witch with powers beyond her wildest dreams, fighting to protect a land, and its creatures, from the dark forces that threaten to destroy it.
I stand in front of Cappy’s cabin, my hand hesitating on the doorknob.
The sun is just starting to peek over the horizon, casting long shadows across the snow-covered porch.
My breath catches in my throat as I remember Mom’s words of warning about controlling my emotions in cold weather.
I take a deep breath and push the door open.
The frigid air hits my face, but instead of biting at my skin, it feels refreshing, almost electric.
My fingers tingle with an unfamiliar energy, and the snow beneath my boots seems to pulse, responding to my presence.
I step forward, watching in amazement as frost patterns spiral outward from where my feet touch the ground.
I enter the cabin, my boots leaving wet marks on the wooden floor.
The main room is cramped, with hunting gear and survival supplies stacked against the walls.
Cappy sits at his kitchen table, surrounded by yellowed papers and leather-bound journals.
"These were your grandmother’s," he says, his voice low and gravelly.
"She was a snow witch too, you know. She protected these lands for years."
My hands shake as I pick up the first journal.
The cover is worn and cracked, but the pages inside are filled with handwritten notes.
The date on the first page reads 1943.
I flip through the pages, marveling at the detailed drawings of arctic creatures and the notes on how to communicate with them.
There are also spells and incantations for controlling ice magic, as well as warnings about dark forces that threaten the land.
A photo slips out of the journal as I turn the page.
It’s a picture of our grandmother standing in this very cabin, her hands outstretched and frost swirling around her fingers.
She looks determined, fierce even.
"Why didn't you tell me about this sooner, Cappy?" I ask, my voice trembling with a mix of anger and awe.
"Your mother thought it was best to keep it from you until you were ready," he replies, his eyes meeting mine with a hint of regret.
"But now that the darkness is rising again, there's no more time to wait."
