One little slime.
All of this.
It did it.
Why did we put a vent in containment?
Who the hell puts an open vent V V V
V V V in containment?
I don’t know.
And honestly, who cared?
We never thought this would happen.
It was supposed to be a slow process, not this.
What even is ‘this’?
The question I keep asking myself over and over again as I stare at the readouts before me is: how?
How could one little slime do so much in such a short time?
Looking at the readouts, it’s hard to believe that this is real.
Just yesterday, I was staring at the same readouts, thinking that this was all so mundane.
There was nothing special about this project, nothing exciting or even interesting.
We were told by Dr. Reed that the samples we were given would grow slowly, maybe an inch every few days.
They would require constant care and attention to ensure that they would thrive and grow at all.
And then today happened.
I woke up early, before my alarms went off, with nothing on my mind but the usual routine.
The Slime That Ate The Lab
I got dressed, brushed my teeth, and headed to the lab.
When I got there, it was like a war zone.
The slime had oozed out of the containment unit and was spreading through the corridors.
Dr. Patel was typing away on her tablet, trying to track where it was going.
Dr. Lee was pacing back and forth in front of the containment unit, muttering something about miscalculations.
And Dr. Reed was barking orders at everyone, but his voice was drowned out by the alarms that were blaring throughout the facility.
I grabbed a containment suit and headed towards the mass that was spreading down the corridor.
I wanted to get a closer look at it, see what it was doing.
As I approached it, I could see that it seemed to be pulsing.
It almost looked like it had a heartbeat.
Like it was alive.
And then, it turned and looked at me.
