I woke up to the sound of my cat meowing.
I looked over at my alarm clock and it said 4:30 am.
I knew I had to get up to get ready to go fly today but I didn't have a flight until 7:30 am.
The first thing I did was feed my cat then I started to get ready for the day.
I took a shower, got dressed, had a cup of coffee, and then headed out the door.
I drove my car down the highway towards Edmonton, Alberta, Canada where I worked as a cargo pilot.
The company I worked for was called General Express and we mainly flew De-Havilland Canada Dash 8-400s but we also had a few Douglas DC-3's as well.
Our DC-3's were built in 1944 and were still flying strong after all these years mainly due to the fact that my best friend Jake Mitchell was the head mechanic at General Express.
He took care of those planes like they were his own children.
After about a half an hour drive, I finally arrived at the airport and made my way inside.
The first person that I saw inside was Evelyn Carter who was the operations manager at General Express in Edmonton.
The Skybound Chronicles
Evelyn was sitting at her desk in the operations room going over some paperwork under the harsh fluorescent lights.
It was 5:30 am and it was dark outside so the lights were on.
I walked over to her desk and stood there for a minute waiting for her to look up.
She finally looked up and saw me standing there.
"Good morning Evelyn," I said.
"Good morning Liam," she replied.
Evelyn was a very professional woman but she looked tired like she had been up all night coordinating flights.
There was a stack of weather reports next to her computer and what looked like a revised flight manifest.
I was about to ask Evelyn about my schedule when she started shuffling through some papers on her desk and pulled out a flight plan and handed it to me.
I took the paper from her and looked at it.
The Skybound Chronicles
"Good morning Evelyn," I said as I took the paper from her.
I walked over to the break room and sat down in one of the chairs to look over the flight plan.
I took a sip of my coffee as I looked at the manifest.
We were flying a Dash 8-400 and our destination was Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
The cargo we were hauling was medical supplies.
This was not a normal route for General Express but I guess that's why they call me Mr. Flexibility.
I looked at the weather forecast and saw that we had to leave by 7:00 am so we could make it to Vancouver by 10:00 am.
That gave us a small window for any mechanical issues that may arise.
I got up and poured myself another cup of coffee then sat back down in my chair.
I looked at the manifest again and saw that it was a direct flight so no stops along the way.
The Skybound Chronicles
I studied the flight plan for about an hour before Harrison walked into the break room. "Hey Liam," Harrison said as he walked in.
Harrison was another pilot who worked for General Express.
He had been with them for about ten years so he knew the company pretty well.
He walked over to where I was sitting and looked at my paperwork on the table.
Harrison noticed right away that we were flying into Vancouver International Airport which wasn't a normal route for General Express.
He pulled out a chair and sat down next to me at the table.
"I see you're going into Vancouver," Harrison said as he poured himself a cup of coffee from the pot on the counter.
"Yes, I'm flying Dash 8-400 C-GEGX," I said as I took another sip of my coffee.
"Vancouver International is not usually one of our routes so I wanted to warn you about their runway approach. It's not as straightforward as some other airports," Harrison said as he looked over my paperwork.
"You'll want to come in on runway 08R which is their longest runway. The approach can be tricky because there are some mountains nearby so you'll have to keep your altitude in mind when descending."
The Skybound Chronicles
I made a note on my paperwork about coming in on runway 08R and about keeping my altitude in mind when descending.
I nodded to Harrison, feeling the weight of the day ahead, and realized this flight was more than just another routine trip.
