Danny is a scientist on the cusp of a breakthrough in a technology that can change size of an organism. Richard is a past friend who stumbled unexpected into the lab late at night. Richard appears to be flustered and desperately in need of something...
Danny
He is a dedicated scientist working on a revolutionary sizealtering technology. He is curious, innovative, and determined. Danny spends most of his time in the lab, neglecting other aspects of his life. His past relationship with his brother, Andy, was strained due to their differing upbringing and family dynamics. When Richard, a former college acquaintance, unexpectedly visits him at night, Danny is intrigued by the man's nervous demeanor and the mysterious package he brings.
Andy
He is Danny's older brother and a successful businessman. He is controlling, judgmental, and distant. Andy was raised in a different social class than Danny and resented the poverty their father faced. Their estranged relationship was marked by tension and unfulfilled expectations after their father passed away. Despite being related to Danny, Andy remains a figure of unresolved conflict in his life.
Jade
She is an exotic dancer at one of Vince's clubs. She is alluring, confident, and perceptive. Jade works under the stage name "Jade Butterfly" and has caught the attention of several influential men. Her involvement with Richard suggests a complex personal relationship aside from their professional connection at the club.
"Shit, I did it!"
I shout in the small lab I’ve been holed up in for the last few months.
My graduate student, Nate, looks over at me with a wide grin.
"Really?"
He asks, his eyes wide with hope.
It’s not every day you hear a scientist say they’ve made the discovery of a lifetime.
Especially when that discovery has the potential to change medicine and the world as we know it.
"Is it dead?"
Nate asks, his eyes on the small petri dish in front of me.
The one I just zapped with my sizealtering technology.
"No, it’s still very much alive."
I let out a breath as I stare down at the petri dish and what used to be a microscopic organism now large enough to see with the naked eye.
This is it, this is the break through I’ve been working toward for years.
"Fuck," Nate curses, his eyes wide as he looks around the lab.
"I’m so used to people walking in here, I forget that it’s not normal for most people to see this kind of stuff."
"You mean like your brother?"
Nate snorts.
"Yeah, like Andy. He’s always popping in unannounced."
"He does that to me too," I admit.
"He’s a bit of a control freak."
"Yeah, no shit," Nate snorts.
"My brother is a total dick," Nate says with a chuckle.
I set my tools down and turn toward the door.
My heart rate picks up at the unexpected intrusion.
The door slips open and a man in an expensive suit slips inside.
His suit is wrinkled and his normally perfect hair is a mess.
He looks around nervously before his eyes land on me.
"Shit, Richard."
I mutter under my breath as I watch him walk toward us.
Nate shifts uncomfortably next to me and I know he recognizes Richard from the few times he’s come to visit with those mysterious packages.
I quickly slide the petri dish into a drawer and turn back to Richard.
His eyes track the movement though, and I can tell he knows that I’m hiding something.
"What are you doing here?"
I ask him, trying to keep my voice low.
He glances around the room nervously, his eyes stopping on the security cameras mounted in each corner.
"Can we talk?"
I motion for Nate to leave us alone.
He nods and grabs his stuff before he slips out of the room, leaving us alone.
Richard’s expensive cologne can’t hide the smell of cigarette smoke that clings to his suit.
I follow him through the double doors and down the narrow hallway that leads to my office.
I flip on the light and grimace at the harsh glow of the fluorescent lights.
My office is small with a metal desk covered in stacks of research papers and empty coffee cups.
The only other thing in here is a metal folding chair tucked into the corner of the room.
"Have a seat."
I motion to the chair, but Richard shakes his head.
"No, I’m fine."
His hands shake slightly as he shoves them into his pockets.
He paces back and forth between my desk and the wall, checking his phone every few minutes.
