"Stay close," Trevor whispered.
I moved cautiously behind him, and he slowly pushed the door wide.
It was clear; there was no one there.
But then Trev stopped dead in his tracks, and I almost collided into him.
"What is it?"
I whispered, my eyes darting around the room.
"Look," Trev said softly, and I followed his gaze to the door next to us.
It was slightly ajar; maybe we had pushed it when we came in?
But then I frowned; it had to be something more.
"Why would they leave their office door open?"
I wondered aloud.
"Let’s go find out," Trev said, pushing the door further open.
As we stepped inside, Trevor shut the door behind us, and I let out a gasp.
There were papers all over the desk, and it looked like someone had just rushed out.
"This must be it," I said, moving closer to Trevor.
"Trev, their desks… they’re full of papers."
Trevor didn’t respond, and I turned around, confused.
He was staring at something on the wall, and I moved closer to see what it was.
There was a piece of paper taped to the wall, and it looked like a note.
I frowned; this had to be something more.
The Silent Scream
I approached the wall, my flashlight beam landing on the paper.
Trevor stood guard by the door while I moved closer to the paper.
I reached out my hand and peeled back one edge of the paper; I didn’t want to damage it, just in case it was evidence.
The handwriting was messy, almost frantic, and black ink smeared across the white surface of the paper.
My hands began to shake as I realized whose handwriting it was.
It was the same as the last letter my sister had written before she was murdered.
I let go of the paper and steadied myself against the desk.
The documents crunched under my palm, and Trevor moved closer to me.
"What is it?"
He asked softly.
The Silent Scream
I swallowed hard and tried to calm myself down before I spoke.
"It’s her writing," I whispered, "the same writing as my sister’s letter."
Before I could read the note, we heard footsteps in the hallway.
"Do you think they know we're here?" Trevor whispered, his voice tense.
I shook my head, trying to keep my voice steady. "I don't know, but if they find us, we might finally get some answers."
The Silent Scream
Trevor nodded, eyes narrowing with determination. "Then let's make sure we get what we came for before they do."
I reached for the note again, my fingers shaking as I carefully peeled it from the wall.
Trevor kept watch at the door, his back pressed against it to block any sudden entry.
The footsteps grew louder with each passing second, the click of heels against the floor echoing through the hallway.
My heart raced in my chest, pounding out a rhythm that matched the approaching steps.
I folded the paper quickly and tucked it into my jacket pocket, hoping it wouldn’t crease too much.
The Silent Scream
Trevor moved closer to me, positioning himself between me and the door.
The footsteps stopped right outside, and I held my breath.
I pressed myself against the wall beside the door frame, hoping to remain hidden if someone entered.
Trevor’s hand found mine in the darkness, giving it a reassuring squeeze as we waited.
