I am Jeff, a 15-year-old boy.
I am the middle child.
I can shrink, which happened five days ago.
I was in a shop, and a strange-looking old man named Zola blew magic dust on me, shrinking me five feet down to the ground.
He said if I wanted to be back to normal size again, I would have to get the attention of either my mum, brother, or dad.
If I didn't get their attention by the time the sun went down, I would be eaten.
My life depended on it.
The day Zola shrunk me was the day before the family cookout we were having in two days.
I tried my best to get my family's attention but failed every time, and now I had just one day left to try and save my life from being eaten.
Today was the day of the family cookout, and I was going to try my best once again to see if I could get their attention and save my life.
"Jeff, where are you going?"
I heard my mum say as I walked out of the house.
"I'm just going out with my friends," I said quickly before walking away and leaving her behind.

I sneak back into the house through the gap under the front door.
My tiny body squeezes through just in time before the door closes shut.
The kitchen sounds busy - pots clanking, water running, mum's footsteps moving back and forth as she prepares for the cookout.
I spot a chair leg and start climbing, using the wooden ridges as handholds.
My arms ache as I pull myself up onto the seat.

Then, I grab the tablecloth and scale the final stretch.
Reaching the tabletop, I dodge between bowls of chips and vegetable platters.
A knife nearly clips me as mum chops carrots.
She pauses, her phone buzzing on the counter.
She wipes her hands on her apron and answers, lowering her voice.
"I know what Zola did," she whispers, glancing around.
"But we can't tell Jeff about the deal you made."
My heart pounds in my chest.
I crouch behind a napkin holder, inching closer to listen.
Dad's muffled voice crackles through the speaker.
Mum's knife clatters onto the cutting board.
"Five days was the agreement," she says, her voice trembling.
"If he doesn't figure it out by sunset..."

"...we'll have to go through with it," Dad's voice responds, heavy with reluctance.
"But he's just a kid, Sarah," Mum pleads, her eyes darting towards the window as if searching for an answer.
"We didn't have a choice, and you know it," Dad insists, his tone firm yet filled with regret.
