I couldn’t believe it.
I had figured out how to use the weird watch from my grandfather’s attic.
It was a little strange that it only worked once I said the magic words, but who was I to question it?
After all, it had just shrunk me down to 5 inches tall.
That was pretty cool.
I stood up on the counter, looking around at the giant kitchen island.
I had been walking for what felt like hours, and I still hadn’t found anyone.
I had tried calling for my mom and my sister, but they didn’t hear me.
I was starting to get worried that I would never find them.
"Hello," I called again, just in case someone had magically appeared while my back was turned.
There was no answer, of course.
I sighed and hopped down from the counter.
It was a long way down, but I just jumped and rolled with the impact.
It wasn’t that bad.
As I walked across the floor, I realized that the kitchen island was moving.
At first, I thought it was just my imagination.
Then I saw the giant metal thingy on the side move.
It looked kind of like a knife, but bigger.
Way bigger.
"Whoa," I said, stopping in my tracks and taking a few steps back.
The kitchen island moved closer and closer until it stopped right in front of me.
The Shrunk Series
I pressed myself against the base of the kitchen cabinet, my heart pounding in my chest.
The metal edge of the island scraped against the floor, making a loud noise that echoed off the walls.
It was so loud that I could feel it vibrating through my body.
I held my breath and waited for whatever was on the other side to come out.
I didn’t know what it was, but I knew it couldn’t be good.
The kitchen island moved again, and I heard a loud creaking sound coming from above me.
It sounded like someone was opening the front door.
Heavy footsteps vibrated the floor beneath me, causing dust to fall from the baseboards.
"Hello?" a voice boomed from above.
I looked up to see Mom’s shoes towering over me like skyscrapers.
The Shrunk Series
She was standing at the top of the stairs, looking around as if she were searching for something. I ran towards her as fast as I could, dodging under her feet and jumping over cracks in the floor.
The island's metal edge swung again, forcing me to duck behind a table leg.
Mom's footsteps grew louder as she came down the stairs.
She walked right past me, her eyes fixed on the moving island.
I waved my arms and shouted her name, but she didn't seem to hear me.
The Shrunk Series
I watched helplessly as she reached out to touch the island, unaware of the danger lurking beneath.
I dashed across the kitchen floor, my heart pounding in my chest.
Mom's giant hand moved closer and closer to the island's sharp edge.
The rubber sole of her sneaker loomed before me like a cliff face.
I grabbed onto the shoelace and started climbing, using it like a rope to pull myself up.
The coarse fabric of her sock stretched out above me like an endless desert.
The Shrunk Series
I strained my arms and legs to climb higher, fighting against the swaying motion of her steps.
The kitchen island's metal edge glinted menacingly above me, waiting to slice through anything that got in its way.
I was halfway up her shoe when she shifted her weight, nearly dislodging me from my precarious perch.
I held on tightly, knowing this was my only chance to save her.
