I was lost in another world.
If I wanted answers to my questions, I had to get a warrior from each of the species I came across and lead them through battles.
That was the only way I could get back home.
Luckily, I’d already found a werewolf warrior named Zax and a sorceress named Nix.
Now all I needed to do was find a warrior from the last species: vampires.
"Zax, how long will it take to get to the vampire kingdom?"
I brushed my bangs out of my eyes as I walked.
"I’m not really sure. All I know is that it’s about a week from here."
A week?
That was way too long!
I didn’t have time for this.
"Can we go faster? I don’t want to take so much time."
Zax chuckled and shook his head.
"I’m sorry. But there’s no way we can move faster than this. We’re already moving pretty fast for a group our size."
I frowned but didn’t say anything else.
I knew he was right; after all, we had two people who weren’t used to walking around so much every single day.
"Nix? Are you okay?"
I turned my head to the side and asked the question to the girl walking on the other side of me.
The shadows beyond the veil
I glanced at her face.
Her eyes were half-closed, and she looked like she was about to fall asleep.
I had an idea.
"Nix, remember the spell you used last time? The one where you levitated all of us?"
She nodded.
"Yeah, I remember. What about it?"
"Can you do that again? I mean, can you lift us all up and make us go faster?"
She shook her head.
"I don’t think so. I could do that last time because it was only for a few seconds. But if I had to maintain that spell for three people over a long distance, I’d be completely drained."
I sighed and looked at Zax.

"What about you? Can you do anything to make us go faster?"
He shook his head.
"I’m sorry, but I can’t think of anything. Maybe we can find some horses in the next village we come across."
I frowned.
Didn’t he remember the stories he told me about vampires?
They were undead creatures, and they had no heartbeat or pulse.
All animals would run away from them because they could sense their undeadness.
I didn’t think we could find any horses in vampire territory. "Let’s just keep walking," I said, sighing once more.
We kept walking for a few more hours until the sun started setting.
Our feet were dragging in the dirt, and we were all tired from walking for so long.
Nix stumbled over a root on the ground and almost fell, but I caught her arm before she hit the ground.
She looked up at me with tired eyes and smiled weakly.
"I’m sorry," she whispered.
"I didn’t mean to trip."
"It’s okay," I said softly.
"We should stop soon anyway. We can make camp for the night."
I looked around and saw a clearing up ahead of us.
"Let’s make camp there," I said, pointing to it.
As we settled down, Nix suddenly spoke up, her voice barely above a whisper.
"I've been keeping something from you both," she confessed, her eyes darting between us.

Zax raised an eyebrow, curiosity piqued. "What is it, Nix? You know you can trust us."
Around the campfire, Nix wrung her hands nervously and avoided eye contact.
"I've been tracking something," she admitted, her voice trembling slightly.
"There's been some unusual magical activity following us."
Zax tensed beside me, his fur beginning to rise along his arms.
"What kind of magical activity?" he asked, his voice low and cautious.
Nix hesitated before pulling out a small crystal pendant from her pocket.
The crystal's surface was clouded with dark swirls, unlike its usual clarity.
"This pendant has been recording traces of shadow magic," she explained, holding it up for us to see.
"It's the same type used in those forbidden rituals."
I leaned forward to examine the crystal more closely, but Nix suddenly yanked it away from me.
The shadows beyond the veil
"Don't touch it!" she warned, her eyes wide with fear.
"We don't know what kind of magic this is. It could be dangerous."
As if on cue, the crystal began to pulse with an ominous purple glow.
Zax's eyes narrowed, and he growled softly, "Are you saying someone is using this magic against us?"
Nix nodded, her voice barely audible, "I think so. And if I'm right, it means we're being hunted."
The shadows beyond the veil
I felt a chill run down my spine as I asked, "Do you have any idea who might be behind this?"
