Raszire Thorne
conflicted, and powerful. Raszire uses his powers for teleportation, protection, and crafting weapons. He struggles with his attraction to his wife's sister, Lyra, while maintaining a complex relationship with his wife, Aria. His bond with Lyra deepens as they navigate their shared powers and the challenges of their world.
Aria Thorne
pragmatic, and strongwilled. Aria supports Raszire in his duties as a Shadowwalker and shares a deep bond with him. Her relationship with her sister Lyra is strained due to Lyra's mysterious powers and her own feelings of inadequacy. Despite this, she remains committed to her marriage and duties.
Lyra Thorne
alluring, and powerful. Lyra's abilities are both intriguing and unsettling to Raszire, who harbors unspoken feelings for her. Her presence creates tension within the family dynamics as she navigates her own identity amidst the expectations placed upon her by others.
I am Raszire, the Shadowwalker.
With a flick of my wrist, the ground beneath my feet shimmers like a dark mirror, a hole opening in the earth.
I step into the shadows and am gone.
I reappear on the other side, on a hill overlooking the city.
My ability to manipulate shadows has its uses.
I can teleport short distances in the blink of an eye, avoid attacks, turn invisible for stealth, and even craft shadowy illusions to distract my enemies and shadowy armor to protect myself.
A skilled Shadowwalker such as myself can do many wondrous things.
But despite all my power, there is one thing that I cannot do.
I cannot seem to shadow myself from the temptation of Lyra, my wife’s sister.
Aria
"My dear husband, I am home!"
Aria greeted me as I walked through the front door.
Her sword was still in hand, and her face was smeared with soot.
"I brought dinner."
She held up a bag of what looked like roasted rabbit.
"Hello, Raszire."
Lyra spoke from her seat at the table, already cutting up some vegetables from our garden.
She never seemed to get dirty, no matter what she was doing.
I swallowed and nodded to them both.
"Hello," I said, taking Aria’s bag and sword from her.
She went straight to the sink to wash her hands, while I set the table and put the rabbit in the oven to keep it warm.
I moved to stand beside her at the sink.
My footsteps were slow and deliberate, so as not to startle her.
The water ran over her hands, washing away the dirt and blood.
She was telling me about how she had tracked a group of bandits through the western woods, and I could hear the familiar excitement in her voice.
I tried to focus on what she was saying, but my attention kept being pulled away by Lyra’s presence behind us.
I could hear the soft thud of her knife against the cutting board as she chopped up some carrots.
It was a soothing sound, one that made me want to lean back against her.
I leaned my hip against the counter instead, watching Aria as she scrubbed at a particularly stubborn spot of soot on her forearms.
"What kind of weapons did they have?"
"They were all armed with swords and daggers," Aria said, rinsing off her hands before turning to me.
"They seemed to be well-trained. I think they might have been mercenaries at one point."
She looked tired, so I reached out and brushed some soot from her cheek.
"Did you find anything else?" I asked, glancing over at Lyra, who was now watching us intently.
"Just this," Aria replied, pulling a small, ornate pendant from her pocket and handing it to me.
Lyra's eyes widened as she leaned forward, whispering, "That's the crest of the Black Thorn Guild."
I leaned against the kitchen counter, watching as Lyra stepped closer to examine the pendant.
Her fingers were trembling slightly as she reached out for it, and I instinctively extended my palm, holding the Black Thorn crest where she could see it better.
The metal was cold against my skin, but when Lyra’s fingertips brushed across my hand to trace the guild’s symbol, warmth spread from that point of contact.
Our eyes locked, and I noticed something I had never seen before.
There were flecks of gold in her dark irises, shining like tiny stars in the night sky.
The shadows in the room seemed to pulse and deepen around us, responding to our combined presence.
"Lyra," Aria said, breaking the spell that had fallen over us.
Lyra turned to her sister, sinking down into one of the kitchen chairs as if she had lost the strength to stand.
The shadows seemed to writhe and twist around her feet, reacting to her distress in ways that I had never seen before.
I sat in the chair across from Lyra, noticing that her face was even paler than usual.
She held the pendant clutched tightly in one hand, the other pressed against her mouth as if she was holding back tears.
"I-I used to be part of the Black Thorn Guild," Lyra said finally, looking up at us with tear-filled eyes.
Aria stepped behind me, her hands coming to rest on my shoulders like a vice grip.
"Tell us what happened."
Lyra swallowed hard before continuing.
"The Black Thorn Guild is a secret group of assassins. We were trained from a very young age in how to infiltrate places undetected and eliminate targets quickly and quietly."
She ran her fingers over the scars on her wrists that I had never noticed before.
They looked like old whip marks. "The guild members were all girls, mostly orphans or daughters of poor families who were desperate for money. We would sneak into towns and cities under the cover of darkness and complete our assignments without anyone ever knowing we had been there. We called ourselves the ‘midnight flowers,’ because we moved unseen like ghosts and left nothing behind but death." The shadows in the room seemed to be growing thicker and darker as Lyra spoke, until they were nearly swallowing all the candlelight.
Aria's grip on my shoulders was painful now, but I did not try to pry her fingers away.
Instead, I leaned back into her embrace and listened intently as Lyra told us more about her past with the Black Thorn Guild.
"There was a girl there named Elara," Lyra said finally, meeting my gaze once more.
