I am the mightiest Shadow King the world has ever known.
My power is rivalled by none, not even the gods.
For I am ruler of a realm where shadows have formed their own kingdom, and in it, the strong reign supreme.
No one is even aware that such a realm exists, for we are invisible to the mortal eye.
I dwell in the contemporary realm.
My legion of shadows is loyal and fearsome, and they do my bidding without question.
I return home from my shadow realm, shifting out of it and into my mundane apartment.
My parents are sitting in the living room, waiting for me.
My mother fusses over me, straightening my wrinkled clothes.
"You've been out all day," she says, her voice full of worry.
"Where have you been?"
I shrug, not wanting to reveal too much.
"Just hanging out with friends," I say.
My father gives me a stern look.
"You know you're supposed to be home by dark," he says.
"You're too old to be staying out all night."
I nod, knowing better than to argue with him.
But the truth is, I've spent the day commanding my legions of shadow warriors, sending them out on missions and conquering new territories in the shadow realm.
"The shadow has but one king, and that is I."
My parents have no idea that their son is a king in a secret realm.
To them, I'm just a normal teenager who likes to hang out with his friends. I sit down at the dinner table with my parents, picking at my food as they talk about their day.
My mother mentions a nice office job opening up at her friend's company, and how she thinks I should apply for it.
My father grunts in agreement, saying that I need to get a real job instead of wandering around all day doing who-knows-what.
I tune them out, lost in my own thoughts about the shadow realm and my duties as its king.
Suddenly, I see a flicker of movement out of the corner of my eye.
It was a shadow, but not an ordinary one—this was a shadow of Bell, specially sent to convey messages to me, appearing in the realm of mortals.
The shadow flickers across the wall, drawing my attention without alerting my parents.
I excuse myself from the table, saying that I need to use the bathroom.
But instead, I head to my room and close the door behind me.
The shadow messenger flickers again, this time taking on a more defined form.
It's a shadowy replica of Bell, my trusted advisor and messenger in the shadow realm.
"Your Majesty," the shadow says, bowing its head.
"There has been a breach of our outer barriers."
"What do you mean?"
I ask, my heart racing with concern.
"Unknown warriors have entered our realm," the shadow replies.
"They are hunting our shadow beasts, harvesting their crystals."
I clench my fists, anger rising within me.
"How many?"
"Several," the shadow says.
"They are well-equipped and seem to be working together. They have already taken down several of our beasts."
I grit my teeth, determined to find out who these intruders are and put an end to their activities in my realm.
"Take me to them," I command the shadow messenger. The shadow nods and holds out its hand.
I take it, feeling a strange sensation wash over me as I am transported into the shadow realm.
The world around me changes, becoming darker and more vibrant.
I see the shadows come alive, swirling around me like living tendrils.
The shadow messenger leads me through the winding paths of the realm, past twisted trees and glowing fungi.
We come to a clearing, and there in the center are several figures clad in dark combat gear.
They move with precision and skill, stalking their prey through the shadows.
As I watch, one of them lunges forward and strikes down a shadow beast with a swift blade.
The creature lets out a pained howl as it falls to the ground, its body slowly dissipating into nothingness.
The warrior bends down and retrieves a glowing crystal from the beast's core.
They repeat this process several times, taking down multiple creatures and harvesting their crystals. I watch them with growing anger, clenching my fists at my sides.
Who are these intruders, and why are they hunting my creatures?
One of them pulls out a device that looks like a scanner, sweeping it across the darkness.
The light from the device cuts through my messenger's form, causing it to dissipate into nothingness.
I'm left standing alone in the clearing, facing off against these unknown warriors.
Suddenly, I hear my mother's voice calling up from downstairs.
"Come finish your dinner!" she shouts.
