It’s been six months since I moved to New Castle.
Six months since I started working with Cinderella and the rest of Prince Charming’s old circle.
Six months since my heart broke into a million pieces and I realized I had to start over.
I thought I was doing okay.
I mean, I was building a new life.
Making new friends — like Bella, who was currently getting ready for her date with her boyfriend.
I was focusing on my job, and I was even trying to put myself out there again.
Well, not technically, but I had gone on a date last week.
It didn’t end well, but that wasn’t the point.
The point was that I was trying.
Even if it felt like a part of me had died along with my relationship, I was putting on a good face and pretending to be okay.
Because what else could I do?
I’d spent years building a life with someone only to have it all fall apart.
Now, it was time to start over.
"Hey," Bella said as she came into the living room where I was sitting.
She was dressed in a pair of skinny jeans and a red sweater, her hair curled and half pulled back into a half-up, half-down hairstyle.
I watched as she turned to look at herself in the hallway mirror, adjusting the sweater so it hung just right on her shoulders.
She reached up and fussed with one of her curls, pulling a loose strand back and pinning it into place.
Then she turned to me, her eyes softening as she took me in.
I was slouched on our secondhand couch, my legs stretched out in front of me.
I was wearing a pair of old sweatpants and a t-shirt that had seen better days.
The fabric of the couch was scratchy against my skin, and I could feel the worn springs through the cushions.
Bella walked over and sat down beside me, the cushions dipping under her weight.
She smelled like her usual perfume — something floral and expensive — and I couldn’t help but think about how I hadn’t washed my hair in two days.
She reached over and squeezed my hand, then pulled it into her lap.
"Hey," she said again, smiling at me.
I shrugged, pulling my knees up to my chest and wrapping my arms around them.
"Hey."
"Are you sure you don’t want to come with us?"
I stared at myself in the bathroom mirror, grimacing at my reflection.
My hair was a tangled mess, and my eyes were puffy from crying.
The thought of going out made my stomach turn, but Bella’s invitation echoed in my head.
I turned on the faucet and splashed water on my face, the coolness helping to calm my skin.
Then I brushed my teeth mechanically, the familiar motion soothing me.
Each small action felt like a victory, and I clung to that feeling as I walked back to my bedroom.
My closet was a mess, clothes spilling out onto the floor.
I pushed past the fancy dresses I hadn’t touched since moving here and pulled out a clean pair of black jeans and my favorite oversized sweater.
It wasn’t glamorous, but it was better than sweatpants.
My hands shook slightly as I applied minimal makeup — just enough to look presentable.
Bella knocked softly on the doorframe, her voice gentle.
"You're really going to stay in tonight?"
I hesitated, then sighed, "I just... I can't face him yet, not after everything."
