Jake Sim

male. He is a Korean man living in the United States. He is adventurous,introspective,and determined. Jake travels to Korea to explore his heritage and family roots. He meets a woman named Sarah,who becomes his travel companion and potential love interest. Together,they navigate cultural differences and unexpected challenges during their journey.

Mr. Lee

male. He is a local Korean man who helps Jake find his ancestral home in Korea. He is kind,knowledgeable,and patient. Mr. Lee assists Jake in locating his family's old house despite the challenges of language barriers and outdated records. His guidance allows Jake to connect with his roots in a meaningful way.

Sarah Kim

female. She is an American woman of Korean descent visiting Korea for the first time. She is curious,adventurous,and openminded. Sarah meets Jake at the airport and joins him on his journey to explore their shared heritage. She struggles with cultural differences but finds comfort in Jake's company as they navigate unfamiliar places together.

I was born in America, in New York City, but my parents were both from Korea.

That makes me a Korean man.

But I have spoken English my entire life, and I have visited Korea only once before when I was fourteen.

My name is Jake Sim.

I know I don’t look like Jacob, but my parents liked the Bible story of Jacob wrestling with the angel, so they gave me that name.

When I came to Korea before, it was difficult.

I didn’t know the Korean alphabet, so I couldn’t read signs.

I didn’t know how to order food at restaurants.

And everyone stared at me.

I looked Korean, but I acted American—and in Korea that makes you an outsider.

But I am older now.

I have learned some Korean.

And I am not traveling alone.

At the airport, I met a woman named Sarah Kim.

She is an American like me, but her parents are from Korea.
