I was only five years old when I discovered that magic was real, and my whole world changed.
Up until then, I had thought that fairies, griffins, and dragons were only characters in books and films.
That they didn’t really exist and that the magic in those stories was just something people imagined.
It also meant that I spent the first five years of my life thinking that my mom was crazy.
I mean, who else would talk about seeing fairies flitting about the garden and having arguments with griffins on the common?
My friends' moms all thought she was nuts, too, and we were strictly forbidden from playing at my house because of all the ‘germs’.
It was a real pain in the butt, let me tell you.
But it all changed when I found out that magic was real.
It turned out that my mom wasn’t crazy at all.
Not only did fairies exist, but they lived among us.
And not just fairies—griffins, dragons, and all sorts of other magical creatures lived here, too.
They kept their existence a secret from humans by using powerful spells that hid them from human eyes.
Only certain people could see through those spells—and it seemed I was one of them.
My whole world opened up when I found out about magic.
The Secret Life of Fairies
I sit at my desk, pretending to do my homework while I secretly watch the garden through my bedroom window.
The afternoon sun casts long shadows across the garden, and the trees are bathed in a warm, golden light.
My mom’s herb garden is a riot of color, with purple lavender, pink rosemary flowers, and yellow chamomile.
The scent of fresh herbs wafts up from the garden and into my room, making me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
As I gaze out at the garden, I notice something moving among the rosemary bushes.
At first, I think it’s just a bird or a squirrel, but then I catch sight of iridescent wings glinting in the sunlight.
My heart starts to beat faster as I realize that it’s not a bird or a squirrel at all.
It’s a fairy!
I can’t believe it—there’s actually a fairy in our garden!
I lean forward in my chair, trying to get a better look at her.
The Secret Life of Fairies
She’s tiny—no bigger than the pencil that lies on my desk—and she has silvery hair that catches the sunlight and sends shafts of glittering light dancing across the garden. She flits between the rosemary bushes, her wings shimmering as she moves.
I can see that she’s wearing a dress made from what looks like violet petals, and there are tiny flowers woven into her hair.
She’s so delicate and beautiful that I can hardly believe she’s real.
As I watch her, she darts up towards my window and hovers there for a moment, looking at me curiously.
I hold my breath, not wanting to scare her away.
The Secret Life of Fairies
She flutters closer to the window, her wings beating rapidly as she examines me more closely.
I can see that she has large blue eyes and delicate features, and there’s a mischievous glint in her eye that makes me think she might be trouble.
My hands tremble as I reach for the window latch.
I don’t want to make any sudden movements that might scare her away, so I push the window up an inch at a time.
The evening breeze carries the scent of rosemary into my room, and I can feel the fairy’s eyes on me as I carefully open the window wider.
She darts back slightly as the window moves, but she doesn’t fly away.
Instead, she hovers in front of me, her wings shimmering as she examines the opening with obvious interest.
The Secret Life of Fairies
With a sudden burst of courage, I whisper, "Hello," and watch as her eyes widen with recognition.
The fairy raises her delicate hand and beckons me closer.
I lean forward, my heart pounding in my chest as she flutters towards me.
I can feel the air vibrating with magic as she approaches, and I watch in amazement as a tingling sensation spreads through my body.
It starts at my fingertips and gradually works its way up my arms, leaving a trail of warmth in its wake.
As I look down at my hands, I realize that they’re starting to shrink.
They’re becoming smaller and more delicate, just like the fairy’s.
I glance down at the desk beneath me and see that it’s growing larger and larger until it’s almost as big as a house.
My textbooks look like skyscrapers, and my chair has become a giant tree trunk.
The clothes on my body have transformed into gossamer fabric that shimmers in the fading sunlight. I look back up at the fairy, who nods her head in approval.
I can see that she’s smiling at me, but I’m too busy examining myself to pay much attention to her reaction.
The Secret Life of Fairies
I run my hands over my new wings, marveling at how delicate and light they feel against my skin.
They’re covered in iridescent scales that shimmer in the sunlight, sending shafts of glittering light dancing across the room.
When I try to stand up from my chair, I stumble slightly because I’m not used to having such a light body yet.
But the fairy extends her hand to me again, this time offering support instead of encouragement.
Together, we soar into the twilight, leaving the world I knew far behind.
The Secret Life of Fairies
The silver-haired fairy leads me through the garden, darting between flower stems that now tower like trees.
I wobble uncertainly behind her, my new wings struggling to keep me airborne as we weave past enormous dewdrops clinging to leaves.
When I almost crash into a dandelion, she catches my arm and steadies me with surprising strength.
The garden I’ve known my whole life has become an alien landscape of gigantic proportions.
A passing bee sounds like a freight train, its vibrations shaking the air around us.
The Secret Life of Fairies
I grip the fairy’s hand tighter as we approach a dark gap beneath the garden fence, realizing this is my last chance to turn back.
"Are you sure about this?" I ask, my voice trembling with both fear and excitement.
The fairy nods, her eyes sparkling with a knowing wisdom.
"Beyond the fence lies your true home," she whispers, "a world waiting for you to remember."
I hover at the edge of the fence, my new wings trembling as I stare into the darkness beyond.
The silver-haired fairy tugs gently at my hand, but I resist, looking back at my garden.
From this tiny size, my bedroom window glows like a distant lighthouse, marking the only home I’ve ever known.
The fairy releases my hand and flits a few inches into the shadows, then turns back with an encouraging smile.
I take one step forward, then another, my bare feet brushing against rough wood.
The Secret Life of Fairies
The fence looms overhead like a massive wall.
I force my trembling legs to move, stepping fully into the darkness.
The last rays of sunlight fade behind me, leaving only the soft glow of the fairy’s wings to light our way.
Massive splinters of wood jut out above us like stalactites, and something skitters in the darkness—a beetle the size of a car in my tiny fairy form.
The damp earth beneath my feet feels strange, almost spongy.
When my guide squeezes my hand and points ahead to a faint blue light, I stumble forward, my new wings brushing against the rough wood above.
The Secret Life of Fairies
"Why does it feel like I've been here before?" I ask, my voice barely a whisper in the looming shadows.
The fairy glances at me with a knowing smile, her eyes reflecting the faint blue glow.
"Because you have," she replies softly, "this is where your journey began long ago."
I creep forward, my wings pressed tight against my back in the narrow space.
The blue light pulses ahead like a heartbeat, casting strange shadows on the rough wooden walls.
Each step brings more clarity—the path is lined with tiny glowing mushrooms, their caps releasing sparkles when touched.
My fairy guide pauses to brush one with her hand, and a cascade of light dances around us.
The air grows warmer, sweeter, carrying hints of baked sugar and vanilla.
The Secret Life of Fairies
When I stumble on a hidden root, the fairy catches me with a gentle hand.
"Your memories will return soon," she says, her voice a gentle melody amidst the shadows.
I look at her, confusion mingling with curiosity.
"What memories?" I ask, feeling an unfamiliar longing stir within me.
