I am eighteen years old.
I live with my mom and my fifteen-year-old brother, David, in a big old house on the outskirts of Boulder, Colorado.
I am a high school graduate and I work part-time at the local bike shop.
I own two bikes and have ridden across the state three times.
I do all my own bike repairs and maintenance.
I have no college plans.
I like to bike race, and I’m good at it.
I don’t really have any close friends.
I don’t really need any.
I’m self-sufficient and independent, and I like it that way.
My mom and brother are the same.
We’re all pretty individualistic and private, and we like that about each other.
We’re not a big happy family or anything.
We’re just what we are and that’s okay.
I’ve been pregnant for exactly ten weeks as of today.
I found out one Saturday night when I got back from working at the bike shop to an empty house.
My period was late, but I hadn’t thought much of it because my periods are always irregular.
But that night I felt weird.
The Secret Is Out
Standing in my bedroom, I pull my duffel bag from the closet and drop it on the unmade bed.
The morning sun streams through the window as I pause, one hand resting on my still-flat stomach.
I start talking quietly to the baby.
"What should we bring, little guy? We don’t want to stay too long, but we don’t want to piss off Grandma either. What do you think?"
I move between the dresser and the bag, folding t-shirts and shorts and putting them in the bag.
The Secret Is Out
"What about a couple of pairs of socks? You think Grandma will notice if I wear the same socks two days in a row?"
David passes my open door and gives me a weird look when he hears me talking to my belly.
I sit on the bed and unzip the front pocket of my duffel bag, pulling out the small envelope of ultrasound photos from last week’s appointment.
The grainy black and white images show my tiny baby, barely bigger than a strawberry.
I carefully trace the curve of the head with my finger, remembering how the technician pointed out the flickering heartbeat.
David passes my door again, this time peering at what I’m holding.
Without saying anything, he walks over and sits beside me on the bed.
