A guy is astonished when his friend takes him to a fenced in area of his backyard that is full of four legged copies of his friend, tall and with four human legs, and four bare feet, and they are terribly crowded, but they enjoy holding each other and jostling together.
I was astonished when my friend led me to the back of his house, showing me a secret.
When Mark called me over yesterday, he didn’t mention anything about coming over to his place.
He just told me to come over, so I did.
Standing in his driveway now, I wondered what the call was about.
I hadn’t spoken to him in a while, and he hadn’t given me any warning about this visit.
Mark Thompson was a good friend, but secretive.
He walked down the driveway toward the back of his house, gesturing me to follow.
I did, curiosity getting the better of me.
As we walked around the side of his large suburban home, I noticed that part of his backyard was fenced in.
I had been to Mark’s place before, but I had never seen the back or noticed that he had anything fenced in.
"What’s behind the fence?"
Mark nodded and opened the gate.
As we stepped through, I looked around, trying to see what was here.
The area was small, and at first, I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary.
But then something moved on the ground.
The Secret In The Backyard
I squinted, trying to make out what it was.
It was a movement, but I couldn’t tell what was moving.
It looked like a person, but it was on the ground.
Then I saw another one move, and another.
They were all over the place, and they were moving.
I blinked, trying to make sense of it.
As my eyes adjusted, I saw them.
There were dozens of them, each one identical to Mark.
They were four legged creatures, tall and with four human legs and four bare feet.
They had Mark’s face, but they looked even more handsome than he did.
Their faces were serene and confident, untouched by the burdens of our world.
They moved around on the ground, jostling each other playfully.
The Secret In The Backyard
Their laughter was soft and pleasant.
Mark watched them with pride in his eyes, his secret now out in the open.
I approached them cautiously, extending a hand toward one of them.
It reached up and touched my hand with its own.
The skin was warm and familiar, like Mark’s skin. "What are they?"
I asked Mark in amazement.
He smiled and gestured for me to follow him.
We walked over to a bench that sat in the shade of a tree, and he sat down next to me.
"They’re called Marks," he said quietly.
"They’re something I created."
I looked at him in confusion.
"What do you mean? How did you create them?"
Mark sighed and ran a hand through his hair.
"It’s hard to explain," he said.
"I’m not even sure how I did it myself. It was just something that happened. I was messing around with some DNA samples in my lab one day, and I mixed some things together. The next thing I knew, these things were growing."
I looked back at the Marks as they played together in the grass.
"How many are there?"
Mark shrugged.
"I’m not sure," he said softly.
"I stopped counting after fifty. They just keep coming."
I shook my head in disbelief.
"This is impossible," I said softly.
