The Scammer Who Pretended To Be A Good Man

In the summer of 2018, in Harare, Zimbabwe, I accompanied Yao Lili to a Christmas party organized by the Brook community.
She met a Chinese man named Cao Zhenyu.
He claimed that his parents had immigrated from Fujian to Zimbabwe and even bought a house in Brook (the most expensive community in Zimbabwe), but unlike others who grew up in Zimbabwe, his Chinese was excellent.
Since Yao Lili just arrived in Zimbabwe and was unfamiliar with her surroundings, her relationships with her coworkers were only average, and she often felt lonely and bored.
Everything changed after meeting Cao Zhenyu at the party.
He was very enthusiastic, frequently looking for opportunities to chat with Yao Lili, even volunteering to teach her how to swim.
Yao Lili was somewhat surprised by Cao Zhenyu's enthusiasm, but she gradually let her guard down.
After all, it was a stroke of luck to meet such a warmhearted friend in a foreign country.
Cao Zhenyu always wore a smile, his words filled with kindness and concern, bringing Yao Lili a long-lost warmth.
On her first trip to the swimming pool, Yao Lili felt nervous since she had never learned how to swim as a child and wasn't very comfortable in the water.
Seeing Cao Zhenyu swim with ease made her feel inferior.
But he was always patient, softly encouraging her, saying, "Don't be afraid; take your time. I will be right here with you to ensure your safety."

Cao Zhenyu's support made Yao Lili gradually relax, and she eventually began to enjoy the pleasure of swimming.
As time passed, Yao Lili's swimming skills improved significantly, and she would receive Cao Zhenyu's smiles and praise every time she finished a lap.
Her heart swelled with warmth.
Apart from swimming, Cao Zhenyu also often took Yao Lili on sightseeing trips to Zimbabwe's famous landmarks and even to local restaurants favored by the people.
Each trip allowed her to experience a different cultural atmosphere and Cao Zhenyu's genuine concern for her.
Before long, Yao Lili found that she was no longer as lonely as when she first arrived in Zimbabwe.
She began to interact more with her coworkers, even actively participating in company activities, and the smile on her face grew increasingly radiant.
All of this seemed connected to Cao Zhenyu's appearance.
Yao Lili confided in me about her feelings, and I asked, "Do you know where he lives?"
Yao Lili replied, "In Brook."
I inquired further, "Do you know which building?"
Yao Lili shook her head, admitting, "I haven't been back to Brook since the Christmas party. Besides, I don't know which building it is." I pressed on, "Have you met his parents?"
The Scammer Who Pretended To Be A Good Man
Yao Lili said, "No."
I continued my line of questioning: "Do you know what his parents do or where they work?"
Yao Lili hesitated before answering, "Only that they run a hardware store in Chinatown."
Chinatown was quite far from Yao Lili's workplace.
I couldn't help but wonder why she didn't ask more questions or show more curiosity about Cao Zhenyu's life.
However, Yao Lili revealed to me that she was afraid of asking too many questions and driving Cao Zhenyu away.
She had an older sister above her and a younger brother below; their family conditions were not good.
She worried that if she asked too much about Cao Zhenyu's family, he would feel bothered and decide he didn't want to be with her anymore. After all, Cao Zhenyu was her first love and an exceptional one at that.
I could only offer words of comfort: "Don't worry; he will be yours if he truly loves you."
As for me, I couldn't help but feel suspicious about this man who seemed too perfect to be true.
He claimed to have grown up in Zimbabwe but spoke Chinese fluently?
Yet, despite my doubts, Yao Lili seemed content, and for now, that was enough.

As we strolled through the bustling streets of Harare, Cao Zhenyu's unexpected proposal to visit Victoria Falls lingered in my mind.
His revelation that he was a travel blogger added another layer of intrigue to his enigmatic persona.
I watched as he effortlessly navigated the crowd, exuding confidence and charm.
"Imagine the stories we'll tell," he mused, his eyes glinting with excitement as he glanced at me.
The thought of capturing the breathtaking beauty of Victoria Falls alongside him sent a thrill through me.
As we paused at a street vendor, Cao purchased two tickets for the journey, holding them out to me with a smile.
"Are you sure you want to do this?" I asked, taking the tickets hesitantly.
"Absolutely," he replied, his voice steady and reassuring. "There's something important I want to show you there."
"What could be so important at Victoria Falls?" I pressed, curious about his intentions.

Cao Zhenyu leaned in, his voice taking on a conspiratorial tone.
"Trust me, it's worth the journey."
With that, we boarded the bus bound for Victoria Falls, our anticipation building with each passing mile.
As the landscape shifted from urban to rural, Cao Zhenyu regaled me with tales of his travels.
His stories were woven with a blend of adventure and humor, effortlessly captivating me.
His laughter echoed through the bus, drawing the attention of fellow passengers.
Despite my initial reservations, I found myself smiling, swept up in the infectious energy of Cao Zhenyu's presence.
The journey was long, but his company made it feel shorter than expected.
Finally, we arrived at Victoria Falls, and as we stepped off the bus, the roar of water enveloped us.
The sheer force of the falls took my breath away, its majesty awe-inspiring.
Cao Zhenyu stood beside me, his eyes shining with excitement as he gazed upon the natural wonder before us.
"It's even more breathtaking than I remembered," he admitted, his voice filled with reverence. As we began our exploration of the falls, Cao Zhenyu led the way, his familiarity with the area evident in every step.

He pointed out hidden gems and shared insights about the geological wonders that surrounded us.
His passion for travel and discovery was palpable, and I found myself drawn into his world.
At one point, as we paused at a scenic overlook, Cao Zhenyu turned to me with a mischievous glint in his eyes.
"I have a surprise for you," he whispered, his voice barely audible over the thundering falls.
Curiosity piqued, I leaned in closer to hear him better.
"What is it?" he asked, his gaze locked onto mine with an intensity that sent shivers down my spine.
"It's something I've been planning for a while now," he continued, his voice filled with anticipation.
"And I think you'll love it."
He reached into his bag, pulling out a small, intricately wrapped package and handed it to me with a knowing smile.
The Scammer Who Pretended To Be A Good Man
As I accepted the package, Cao Zhenyu's demeanor shifted from playful to serious.
"Open it," he urged, his voice low and urgent.
I hesitated for a moment, unsure of what to expect.
But my curiosity got the better of me, and I carefully unwrapped the package.
Inside, I found a collection of artifacts that seemed to be from another era.
Their intricate carvings and worn surfaces hinted at a rich history, one that whispered secrets of the past.
My heart raced as I realized the significance of these objects, their origins shrouded in mystery.
"They're stolen," I whispered, my voice barely audible over the roar of the falls.
Cao Zhenyu nodded solemnly, his eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that sent shivers down my spine.
"We can make a fortune together," he said, his voice filled with a mixture of excitement and danger.
"But we have to be careful. The authorities are closing in."
I felt torn between fear and intrigue, my mind racing with questions and doubts.
The Scammer Who Pretended To Be A Good Man
As I stood at the edge of the overlook, the roar of Victoria Falls echoing in my ears, Cao Zhenyu's words hung in the air like a challenge.
His eyes were fixed on mine, his expression unreadable.
"We can't keep these," I insisted, clutching the artifacts tightly.
His smile faltered, replaced by a calculating look.
"Think about it, Lili," he urged, taking a step closer to me.
"This could change everything for us."
I shook my head, my heart pounding in my chest.
"It's not right," I replied firmly, the tension between us crackling like electricity.
He hesitated for a moment, then sighed heavily.
"Fine," he muttered, turning away from me.
