My name is Abhishek and I am from a traditional Indian family.
My mom is very keen that I should dress like a daughter.
She wants me to wear sarees at home and outside as she thinks it suites me elegantly.
I was shy to oppose her, so I was obeying her.
I know it’s not good for a boy to wear female clothes, but I could not resist my mom’s wish.
She has already stitched some of her old blouses to match my body structure.
She chose some of her old sarees which she thought would suite me well and had given them for stitching.
Two days later, the stitchmaster brought the stitched blouses and sarees.
Mom was very happy to see them and immediately gave me one blouse and saree and asked me to wear it.
I went to the bedroom and changed into the new attire.
It was a light green blouse with a dark green saree.
I came out of the bedroom and mom was amazed to see me in the attire.
She said, "Wow Abhishek, you are looking great. Elegance is what you are!"
Then she called dad also to see me in the attire.
He also supported her saying, "Yes Rajni, he is looking great. I have no problem in dressing him like a daughter. If he is happy then I am also okay."
The Saree Diaries
I was standing in the living room awkwardly.
I was fidgeting with the pleats of the saree.
Mom and dad were admiring me.
The fabric felt strange against my skin.
Sweat was forming under the tight blouse.
Mom circled me and adjusted the pallu of the saree and straightened the folds of the saree.
After a few minutes, I got courage to ask, "Mom, can I change now?"
She frowned and placed her hands on her hips.
Dad was looking at us uncertainly.
Her expression hardened as she looked at me, clearly disappointed that I was not enjoying dressing up.
The Saree Diaries
I looked at my reflection in the mirror.
The saree was draped around my body in a way that seemed awkward and unnatural.
Mom’s hands moved quickly as she adjusted the pleats of the saree.
Dad sat on the sofa, occasionally nodding his head in approval.
The fabric felt suffocating against my skin, and sweat trickled down my back beneath the tight blouse.
The Saree Diaries
I shifted uncomfortably, trying to find the courage to speak up again.
But the weight of Mom’s expectations pressed down on me like a physical force, making it difficult to form the words.
When I opened my mouth to protest once more, I caught the growing disappointment in her eyes and my shoulders slumped in defeat.
I realized that, for now, I had to wear more than just the saree.
