I was born in Russia and came to the United States to attend college.
I met my wife in high school.
She was a senior and I was a sophomore.
We were both in the same history class.
I had just transferred to the school and she was assigned to help me.
Her name is Elena Martinez.
She is Hispanic, and her family did not like it that I was white and they did not like it that she was with a foreigner.
They wanted her to be with a Hispanic man.
Her family did not like me, but Elena loved me.
She stood by me and we got married.
I loved Elena and would do anything for her.
One day, we were driving home from the gym when Officer Johnson stopped us.
He asked for our licenses and registrations.
Elena handed them over, and the cop took them to his cruiser.
He came back with a warning and handed them to Elena.
As he was handing them over, he looked at me with hate in his eyes.
"Are you married to her?" he asked in a mean tone.
"Yes," I replied in a thick Russian accent.
He looked at Elena with hate in his eyes and then back at me.
"Well," he said, "it is not right for people of different races to marry. It should be illegal."
Elena immediately got angry and yelled at him.
"How dare you! My husband and I are legally married. Who are you to say it’s not allowed?"
I could feel Elena’s fingers trembling as they gripped mine.
Her knuckles were white with tension.
The cop, Officer Johnson, stepped back and blocked the door of our car with his body.
His hand rested on the butt of his holstered weapon.
He leaned forward, his face illuminated by the streetlight behind him.
"Maybe you should’ve stayed with your own kind," he sneered, tapping his flashlight against the window glass.
I watched as he intimidated my wife, but Elena tugged my hand again.
"Please, Alexei," she whispered.
I reached for the ignition, but Officer Johnson’s flashlight beam suddenly filled the car through the windshield as he shone it directly into my eyes.
He stepped back, unclipping his radio.
I gripped the steering wheel tighter, watching his every move through the side mirror.
His hand remained on the butt of his weapon as he barked into his radio.
Elena’s breathing grew rapid beside me, her hand squeezing mine harder and harder.
The patrol car’s lights continued flashing, casting red and blue shadows across our faces.
When Johnson stepped back to his car, I took the opportunity to pull out my phone and dial 911 with shaking fingers.
I needed to document this somehow.
I needed to protect us.
Through the rearview mirror, I saw another police car approaching.
I leaned closer to Elena, whispering into her ear, "No one can break us apart."
