I was born to live a normal life, to get a normal job and to have a normal family.
But little did I know that I was the child of the royals.
My mother had kept this secret with her for years and years.
She made me live in a small town so that no one could recognize us that we actually belonged to the royal family.
My mother made me believe all these years that my father was a sinner and that's why she didn't tell him about me.
But the day she died, my world turned upside down.
I learned that my father wasn't a sinner but a king.
Yes, you heard that right!
I am the daughter of the king.
I always thought that my name was Ava Morgan, but no!
My real name is Ava Blackwood, the princess of the kingdom.
I am now in the palace for the past two weeks.
Everyone here knows me but I don't know anyone here.
I have a halfbrother and he is a prince.
Everyone likes him here in the palace and he likes it when everyone calls him "Your Highness."
The Royal Secret
After dinner, I slipped out of the dining hall and made my way to the west wing of the palace.
I had heard from one of the servants that this was where the oldest paintings were kept.
I had always been fascinated by art, and I couldn't wait to see what treasures lay hidden in the palace.
As I walked down the dimly lit corridor, I noticed that it was lined with tall tapestries that seemed to stretch up to the ceiling.
The air was thick with dust, and the smell of old books hung heavy in the air.
I passed by several locked doors, each one adorned with a large iron doorknob and a keyhole that seemed to stare at me like an empty eye socket.
I continued down the corridor, my footsteps echoing off the stone walls.
The corridor eventually opened up into a large room that was filled with rows of shelves stretching all the way to the ceiling.
Each shelf was lined with stacks of books, and there were ladders scattered about the room that looked like they hadn't been used in years. I wandered through the room, running my fingers over the spines of the books as I passed by.
They were all leather bound and looked like they had been here for centuries.
The Royal Secret
I eventually came to a large door at the far end of the room that looked like it hadn't been opened in a long time.
It was locked, but I had a feeling that whatever was on the other side of this door was worth seeing.
I pulled out a small key from my pocket and slid it into the keyhole.
The lock clicked open, and I pushed the door wide.
The room on the other side was even larger than the previous one, and it was filled with all sorts of strange objects.
There were old chairs and tables stacked on top of each other, and there were even a few portraits leaning against one of the walls.
I wandered over to one of them and pulled off the sheet that covered it.
It was a massive gilt-framed portrait, and it depicted a young couple standing together in front of a grand castle.
The woman had long blonde hair, and she wore a beautiful blue gown that looked like it had been painted by one of the masters.
The man beside her had dark hair, and he wore a black suit with a red cloak draped over his shoulder. They both looked so young and happy, and they reminded me of my parents when they were first married.
The Royal Secret
I wondered who they were and why their portrait had been left here to gather dust.
As I studied their faces, I realized with a jolt that the woman in the painting was my mother.
I sat down on the floor cross-legged in front of the painting and stared at it for a long time.
I could feel tears welling up in my eyes, but I blinked them back.
I didn't want to cry right now.
I wanted to remember my mother's face.
Just as I was about to get up and leave, I heard a voice behind me.
"Ava, what are you doing in here?"
I turned to see Isabella standing in the doorway, her arms crossed over her chest.
She looked like she had just walked in on something she shouldn't have.
"I was just looking at this painting," I said, gesturing to the portrait of my mother.
Isabella walked over to where I was sitting and looked at the painting for a moment.
The Royal Secret
"It's beautiful," she said finally.
"But it's not something that you should be looking at. It's not for people like you."
"What do you mean?"
I asked, feeling a bit confused.
Isabella sighed and sat down next to me on the floor.
"You're a princess now, Ava. You can't just go around looking at whatever you want. You have to be careful about what you do. Otherwise, people will start talking."
I nodded, understanding what she meant.
"I'm sorry," I said, standing up and dusting off my dress.
"It won't happen again."
Isabella stood up too and looked at me for a moment before speaking.
"There's something else I need to tell you," she said finally.
"Tomorrow, five princes from neighboring kingdoms are coming here for a diplomatic summit. They'll be staying here for a few days, so we'll all need to be on our best behavior." "Okay," I said, nodding my head.
Isabella smiled slightly and put her hand on my arm.
"I know that this is all new to you, but you'll get used to it eventually. Just remember that these princes are important guests, and we need to make sure they feel welcome here."
I nodded again and smiled back at her.
"I'll try my best," I said.
Isabella smiled again and squeezed my arm before turning and walking out of the room.
As soon as she was gone, I sat back down on the floor and stared at the portrait of my mother again.
I felt like I was starting to understand things better now, but there was still so much that I didn't know.
Just then, I heard a soft voice from the shadows, "You know, she was more than just a queen."
The Royal Secret
Startled, I turned to see my half-brother, Prince Lucas, stepping into the light.
"She was a warrior at heart, and that's why Father loved her so fiercely," he continued, his eyes fixed on the portrait.
I nodded, my hands trembling slightly as I reached out to touch the worn leather cover.
The initials "EM" were embossed in faded gold on the front, and I could feel a strange energy emanating from it.
Before I could open it, Lucas placed his hand over mine, his eyes filled with a mix of sadness and understanding.
"I found this hidden behind the portrait frame many years ago," he said softly.
"But I never had the courage to read it. It felt too personal, like I was invading her privacy."
With that, he stood up and walked away, leaving me alone in the dimly lit room.
I settled into a velvet armchair beneath a wall sconce, the flickering light casting shadows on the walls as dust particles danced in the air.
Opening to the first yellowed page, I ran my finger over my mother's familiar handwriting.
"Ava, if you're reading this, it means I've left you with more questions than answers," the letter began, her words echoing in my mind.
"I wanted to tell you everything, but I feared the truth would put you in danger," it continued, revealing a vulnerability I had never imagined my mother possessed.
The Royal Secret
"And now, it's up to you to decide whether to embrace your heritage or forge your own path," the final line read, leaving me with a choice that weighed heavily on my heart.
