I was assigned to guard the damn prince.
Not just any prince—the most infuriatingly gorgeous prince in all of the kingdom.
He’s also a pain in the ass, and the only thing that makes me want to protect him is seeing how much his sister loves him.
But dammit, I want him.
The only problem with that is he’s the prince.
And I’m just a lowly soldier.
I shouldn’t be wanting him.
Not at all.
Especially when he’s so fucking young.
Eight years younger than me, to be exact.
And I’m supposed to be his protector, not his lover.
But when he kisses me—and to my shock, I kiss him right back—I want to forget about duty and just take him.
Right there in the middle of the throne room.
"Jasper!"
The king barked, bringing me out of my daydream of kissing the young prince on the throne, with no one around to bother us.
Then reality hit me like a ton of bricks as I realized that I wasn’t actually alone with the prince—I was standing right in front of him in the middle of the throne room, and I had to guard his back, not kiss him.
Damn!"Sorry, Highness."
I bowed my head as I looked up at the king.
"No matter what Prince Felix does, you have to stay calm."
The king had told me that before I had even taken on this job.
I stood at attention, trying to keep my face a blank.
My heart still raced from the thought of Felix.
The throne room was huge, but right now it felt like I was suffocating in it.
The king rose from his ornate chair, descending the steps of the dais with slow, measured grace.
He stopped in front of me, his weathered face stern but not unkind.
"You are here to do a duty, a duty to this kingdom. You will protect Felix at all costs."
I glanced over at Felix, who was smirking at me from the corner of my eye.
He loved that he could get to me so easily.
I could feel the king’s eyes on me, so I turned back to him.
"Yes, Highness."
The king placed a heavy hand on my shoulder.
"I know you will do your duty."
He looked me straight in the eyes.
"I promise I will protect him with my life."
The king nodded, but as he turned away, I couldn't shake the feeling that my heart was already lost.
After the meeting in the throne room, I escorted Felix through the castle, down the long western corridor.
The sun was setting, casting long shadows on the floor.
The arched windows were open to let in the cool night air, and Felix's golden hair glowed like a halo.
He walked close to me, his shoulder almost touching mine, and I could feel the heat of his body.
We reached the library doors and he stopped, pretending to adjust his sleeve.
But as he reached for the door handle, his fingers brushed against mine.
It was a casual touch, but it felt anything but innocent.
My hand twitched, wanting to grab his, but I clenched it into a fist instead.
"Why do you always look so serious, Jasper?" Felix asked, his voice teasing yet soft.
"It's my job to be serious, Your Highness," I replied, trying to keep my tone steady.
Felix leaned closer, a playful glint in his eyes. "And what if I told you I wanted more than just your protection?"
I followed Felix into the dimly lit library, where tall shelves of books stretched up to the vaulted ceiling.
The alcove was small, with a single velvet reading chair nestled between the towering bookshelves.
Felix settled into the chair, while I stood guard nearby, my fingers drumming against the hilt of my sword.
The prince picked up a book of romantic poetry, flipping through its yellowed pages.
He cleared his throat and began to read aloud, his voice deep and resonant.
"‘In secret chambers of the heart,
Where forbidden love doth dwell,
A flame doth burn, a flame so bright,
That all else pales in its fiery spell.’"
Each word felt like a deliberate provocation, a challenge to resist his allure.
But as he continued to read, his voice grew softer and more hesitant.
"‘For though our love may be forbidden,
Yet still it burns within my soul,
A flame that flickers yet never dies,
A flame that guides me through life’s darkest role.’"
When he finished reading, Felix closed the book and rose from his chair.
As he walked back to the shelves to return the book, he stumbled slightly, and without thinking I reached out and caught him.
My hands gripped his waist firmly, holding him steady.
I felt the warmth of his body through the thin fabric of his shirt, and I couldn't help but tighten my grip.
The silence of the library seemed to amplify every sensation, as if the whole world was holding its breath.
Neither of us moved to break apart, even though I knew I should.
Felix's hands rested on my chest, fingers curled into the fabric of my uniform.
A guard passed by outside the window, his torch casting flickering shadows across Felix's face.
His eyes searched mine, a mixture of challenge and vulnerability.
I knew I should step back, maintain the proper distance between us.
But instead, my grip on his waist only grew stronger.
Felix rose onto his toes, bringing his face closer to mine.
"Jasper, what are we doing?" he whispered, his breath warm against my lips.
I hesitated, my mind racing for an answer that wouldn't betray my heart.
"Something we shouldn't," I finally replied, my voice barely audible.
