I never thought I’d fall in love.
Not only was I not allowed to, but I didn’t think it was possible for me.
I always thought I was too shy, too boring.
But then I met them.
It all started at a royal ball, one that was being held by my father.
Years ago, he signed an alliance treaty with the other three kingdoms, and ever since then we’ve all gotten along peacefully.
The ball was a way to celebrate this, to bring all of our kingdoms together.
I wasn’t sure I wanted to go, but my father insisted.
So here I was, standing on one side of the room, watching as everyone else danced and celebrated.
"Are you going to just stand there all night?" someone asked from next to me.
I turned to see a beautiful woman with long blonde hair and blue eyes.
She was dressed in a gorgeous white dress that showed off her perfect body.
"I’m Princess Elara," I said, holding out my hand for her to take.
"Princess Isabella," she replied, shaking my hand.
"Nice to meet you."
We stood there for a moment, looking at each other.
I couldn’t help but notice how beautiful she was, how much I wanted to kiss her right there.
But I didn’t.
Instead we started talking, getting to know each other better.
As we talked more, two other women walked up and joined us.
They were both beautiful as well, one with black hair and green eyes and the other with red hair and yellow eyes.
The Royal Ball
"Shall we get some fresh air?" one of them asked, looking at Isabella.
Isabella nodded and took my hand, leading me out onto the moonlit patio.
The other two followed, one of them skipping ahead of us and twirling in her dress.
The other walked right behind us, her shoulder occasionally brushing against mine.
We walked through the garden, the hedges towering above us and making it seem like we were in a maze.
The hedges were lined with rose bushes and marble fountains that had statues of different gods and goddesses.
"I love this time of year," Isabella said as we walked.
"The flowers are so beautiful."
"They are," I agreed.
"Look up," she said, pointing up at the sky.
I did as she said, seeing the stars twinkling above us.
"Beautiful," I said.
The Royal Ball
Isabella smiled and squeezed my hand before letting go.
As we continued to walk through the garden, one of the women suddenly stopped and pointed to a hedge.
"What?"I asked, not seeing anything there.
But then I saw it, a small alcove with a stone bench inside it.
It was hidden by the hedge so well that you could only see it if you knew where to look. "This is perfect," she said, walking over to it and sitting down on the bench.
The rest of us followed her lead and sat down next to her.
We all had to squeeze together in order for everyone to fit on the bench, but no one minded that much.
It actually made it feel more intimate, like we were all sharing a secret together.
As we sat there, I noticed how nice it smelled around us.
It was like a perfume, but not one that you would wear every day.
Then I realized what it was - night-blooming jasmine.
My mother used to grow it in our garden when I was younger and it would bloom at night and fill the air with its sweet smell.
I hadn’t smelled it in years, not since my mother had passed away.
But here it was again, surrounding us as we sat together on this bench. One of the women leaned her head on my shoulder and I felt myself relax as she did so.
She smelled good too, like vanilla mixed with lavender.
It was a scent that I loved and it made me feel happy as soon as I smelled it.
As we sat there for a few minutes, Isabella reached over and took my hand in hers once again.
"Elara, there's something you should know," Isabella said softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
I turned to look at her, feeling a sudden tension in the air.
"My father plans to break the alliance," she continued, her eyes searching mine for understanding.
The Royal Ball
I froze, unsure of what to say.
I could see Charlotte's hand fly up to her mouth, her eyes wide with shock.
Sophia's eyes narrowed as she looked at Isabella, suspicion written all over her face.
The smell of the jasmine was starting to feel cloying now, making my head spin.
Isabella reached into her pocket and pulled out a letter, the seal of her father's crest on it.
It was addressed to me, but it was unopened.
"I'm sorry," she said, her voice shaking slightly as she handed me the letter.
I took it from her, my own hands shaking as I broke the seal and opened it.
As I read through the contents, my heart sank further and further down into my stomach.
This couldn't be happening.
We'd had peace for so long now, and this would throw everything back into chaos. The letter was written in a formal tone, with official signatures and stamps on it.
It was from Isabella's father, the king of their kingdom.
The Royal Ball
He explained that he had been planning this for a while now, slowly manipulating the trade routes between our kingdoms so that his would come out on top.
He had been secretly buying up land along the rivers that flowed between our kingdoms, cutting off our access to them.
He had also been building up his military, preparing for when we would find out what he had done and try to fight back.
There was nothing we could do now except try to negotiate with him and hope that he would listen.
But I knew that he wouldn't.
He had never been one to listen to others, always believing that he was right and everyone else was wrong. As I finished reading the letter, I crumpled it up in my fist and turned back towards the palace.
The other princesses followed behind me as we walked back through the garden and into the ballroom.
The music was still playing and people were still dancing around us, but none of that mattered now.
"Elara, we can't let this happen," Charlotte said urgently, her voice trembling with fear.
Sophia nodded, her expression resolute. "We need to warn your father and gather our allies before it's too late."
Isabella looked at me, her eyes filled with determination. "I’ll help you, Elara. Together, we can stop my father’s plans."
