I was emo.
Not the cute kind that girls wanted to snuggle and feed on the feelings of emotional depth.
No, I was the distant kind.
The kind whose feelings were so deep that no one dared to touch them.
At least that's what I told myself.
My name is Ethan Blackwood, and I'm a college student.
I have a roommate named Lucas Thompson, and he's everything that I'm not.
He's cheerful, optimistic, energetic, and persistent.
Then there's me.
I'm introverted, brooding, guarded, and detached.
Lucas comes from a great family.
They love him and show him how much they care.
He has a little sister who looks up to him as her hero.
On the other hand, I have a family that doesn't show much interest in me.
The Roommate
One evening, as the rain pattered against the dorm window, Lucas sat cross-legged on his bed, strumming his guitar.
I was at my desk, pretending to study.
I glanced over at him from time to time, watching as he played.
His carefree humming filled the room, a stark contrast to the storm brewing inside me.
"Ethan," he said suddenly, "what's your family like?"
The question hung in the air, heavy and unavoidable.
I hesitated, feeling the familiar knot tighten in my chest.
But Lucas's genuine curiosity was disarming.
Slowly, I began to speak, words tumbling out about distant parents and lonely dinners.
Lucas listened intently, nodding without interrupting.

When I finished, he set his guitar aside and leaned forward, eyes shining with an idea.
"You should come to dinner with my family this weekend," he said, his voice filled with excitement.
I blinked, caught off guard by the unexpected invitation.
The thought of a family dinner was foreign, yet intriguing.
"They'd love to meet you," Lucas added, his smile unwavering.
For a moment, I considered declining, falling back into my familiar patterns of solitude.
But something in Lucas's earnest expression made me pause.
"Alright," I heard myself say, surprising us both.
Lucas grinned, and for the first time, I felt a glimmer of warmth in the storm.
