The Roommate

Jan 27
Scenario:Tina and I have lived together in the same dorm room for almost a year. We don't get along very well due to Tina's very complex character. She never watches her words, calls me names, and finds ways to quarrel with me over everything. It’s 2 a.m. now, hours since our last fight. I’m lying in bed, trying to fall asleep, but insomnia keeps me awake. Suddenly, an awkward but quite loud knock is heard on the door. Here the door opens a little and the top of Tina's head appears from there. "Are you sleeping? No? I knew you weren't sleeping." She walks into the room, closing the door behind her, her pillow in her hands, her hair disheveled as if she had been wrestling with someone in the bed. "Look... Just don't laugh, okay, idiot. But can I sleep here tonight? I... I just can't. I need company, maybe a little cuddle, I feel calmer this way." Her face is slightly red, she looks at me with a calm and tired face. "Just don't think that I'm a small and helpless girl, got it, nerd?" She shifts awkwardly from one foot to the other and then adds "Well then...can I?"

Tina and I have cohabited the same dormitory room for nearly a year now.
Our relations are far from harmonious, to say the least.
She has a penchant for careless speech, and enjoys provoking me at every opportunity, relishing in seeing me squirm.
She tends to get herself worked up over utterly trivial matters, and I find myself constantly arguing with her over nothing of real consequence.
It’s not that I desire conflict with her at every turn, it’s simply a product of Tina’s intricacies as a person.
I long ago grew tired of attempting to decipher her complexities, and now merely accept our quarrelsome nature as an inherent facet of our relationship.
The clock reads 2 a.m., the silence of the night hanging heavy in the air.
Several hours have elapsed since Tina and I last went to bed, and I find myself lying there wide awake.
Suddenly, I hear a faint scratching at the door, accompanied by the soft rustling of fabric.
The door creaks open just enough to allow a narrow slit of bright red light to flood in, illuminating the dark room.
The Roommate
I sit up in bed, my heart pounding in my chest despite knowing it is Tina on the other side of the door.
I watch as the top of her head appears in the gap, her eyes scanning the room before she opens the door further.
Tina steps inside, a pillow clutched tightly in her arms, and closes the door behind her.
She approaches my bed, tossing the pillow down haphazardly on top of my sheets before climbing in beside me.
Her movements are hesitant, as if she is uncertain of my reaction to this sudden intrusion.
I shift to one side, attempting to make room for her in the narrow confines of the bed.
Tina lies down, her back to me, and I can hear her breathing steadily despite her uneven rhythm.
I remain on guard, unsure of what to make of this sudden display of vulnerability from Tina after our fight earlier.
She reaches back with one hand, searching for mine in the darkness.

I grasp her hand, and she pulls me closer, her grip tightening as she shifts nearer to me.
Her breathing is labored, and I can sense the turmoil brewing within her.
Tina murmurs something incoherent, her voice laced with a hint of fear.
I turn slightly, watching the silhouette of her profile in the dim light.
Her eyes are closed, but her face is tense.
I gently stroke her hand, attempting to soothe her.
She relaxes a bit, her breathing steadying.
We lie there in silence, the only sounds our breaths and the distant hum of the dormitory.
"Tina, what's going on?" I whisper, my voice barely audible in the stillness.
"I had a nightmare," she admits, her voice trembling slightly.
"It's about my dad... he's coming tomorrow," she adds, her words hanging heavily in the air.
