I walked into the apartment I shared with my boyfriend, Alex, and his best friend, Jason.
Jason was sitting on the couch watching TV.
He looked up at me and smiled.
"Hey, how was your day?"
I forced a smile onto my face.
"It was fine."
I sat down next to him on the couch.
Alex was in our room doing homework.
Or at least that’s what he was supposed to be doing.
I had some news I wanted to tell Alex, but I wasn’t sure how he would react.
Part of me wanted to practice telling Jason before I told Alex.
"You seem distracted," Jason said.
"I’m fine."
I stood up and started pacing around the room.
Jason watched me, a concerned look on his face.
"Lily," he said, standing up and blocking my path.
"What’s going on?"
I took a deep breath and sat back down on the couch.
"I have some news I want to tell Alex."
"What is it?"
I bit my lip.
"I don’t know how he will react."
"Why don’t you try me?"
I hesitated.
Should I really tell Jason first?
Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea.
It wasn’t exactly something I wanted anyone else to know besides Alex.
But at the same time, it might be helpful to get some advice from someone I trusted.
"Is it about school?" he asked.
"No," I said slowly.
"It’s just...I discovered something today. Something about myself."
Jason waited for me to continue, but I didn’t say anything else.
The Roommate
I twisted my hands in my lap, not looking at him.
The words seemed to get stuck in my throat.
I had been thinking about this all day, and I still hadn’t been able to work up the courage to say it out loud.
My fingers unconsciously went to my stomach.
Jason followed the movement of my hands with his eyes.
Something seemed to click in his mind, and he suddenly understood.
He sat down next to me on the couch, but he still didn’t say anything.
He just waited for me to tell him.
The sound of Alex typing away on his computer in our room was the only sound in the apartment.
It was a reminder that we weren’t alone, and it made my heart race faster.
The Roommate
I leaned in closer to Jason and lowered my voice to barely above a whisper.
"I took a test today," I said, my voice shaking.
My hands were trembling, but I tried to keep them still.
I sat back on the couch and fidgeted with the hem of my shirt.
I didn’t look at Jason, but I could tell he was looking at me.
The TV was on in the background, but it was muted so that we could talk.
I heard the sound of Alex’s keyboard clicking away as he typed in our bedroom.
Jason leaned in closer to me, his voice low and patient.
"I’m listening," he said.
I had taken a pregnancy test earlier that day, and it was burning a hole in my bag.
I glanced toward our bedroom door to make sure it was still closed, then turned back to Jason.
"I'm pregnant," I whispered, my voice barely audible.
The Roommate
Jason's eyes widened, and he leaned back slightly, processing the news.
"Does Alex know?" he asked gently, concern etched into his features.
I shook my head.
"No, I haven't told him yet."
Jason shifted on the couch, creating a little more space between us as he processed what I had just told him.
I gripped the edge of the cushion, my eyes darting toward the bedroom door again.
The sound of Alex's typing continued to echo in the apartment, a rhythmic reminder that we weren't alone.
Jason's voice was barely above a whisper as he asked, "How far along are you?"
I swallowed hard, my throat tightening.
"About three months," I replied, my voice trembling.
He nodded thoughtfully, his eyes still fixed on me.
Then he asked, "Do you have the test with you?"
The Roommate
I nodded and reached into my bag, pulling out the pregnancy test.
I held it up for him to see the two pink lines that had appeared three hours ago.
He took it from me and examined it briefly before handing it back to me carefully, making sure not to touch the test strip. I clutched the test tightly in my hand as Jason sat back on the couch.
After a moment of silence, he spoke up again.
"You should tell Alex tonight," he said softly.
The Roommate
I shook my head vigorously, tears welling up in my eyes.
I nodded, feeling the weight of his words settle over me.
"But what if he doesn't take it well?" I asked, my voice barely steady.
Jason gave me a reassuring look, his eyes filled with understanding.
"I'll be here for you, no matter what," he said, his voice filled with sincerity.
I nodded again, feeling a mix of gratitude and trepidation.
I knew I had to tell Alex, but I was scared of how he would react.
The sound of typing from our bedroom suddenly stopped.
It was followed by the sound of footsteps approaching the door.
Jason quickly got up off the couch and moved to the other side of the room.
I shoved the pregnancy test under a cushion on the couch just in time before Alex came out of our bedroom.
He had his laptop tucked under one arm and a confused look on his face as he walked into the living room.
He stopped in the doorway, looking at me sitting on the couch.
His eyes were focused on my face, and I knew he could see that I had been crying.
The Roommate
Before he could ask me what was wrong, I blurted out, "We need to talk."
Jason took that as his cue to leave us alone and stood up from where he was leaning against the kitchen counter. "I actually need to go meet some friends," Jason said as he headed toward his room.
"See you later."
Alex watched him go into his room before turning back to me.
He walked over to where I was sitting on the couch and sat down in the spot Jason had just vacated.
As soon as his weight hit the couch cushion, it shifted and pressed against the pregnancy test that I had shoved underneath it. My heart raced as Alex's hand drifted down toward where it was hiding under the cushion.
I tried not to stare at him, but my eyes were glued to his hand.
I held my breath, hoping that he wouldn't find it.
My fingers tightened around the edge of the couch as I waited for him to pull his hand back out from under the cushion with a shocked look on his face, holding up the pregnancy test for me to see.
Alex's eyes widened as he stared at the test in disbelief.
The Roommate
"Is this...?" he began, his voice trailing off as he looked up at me.
I nodded, my heart pounding in my chest.
The room fell silent, the only sound coming from the TV in the background.
I watched as Alex's eyes darted back and forth between me and the test in his hands.
He turned it over in his fingers, staring at it as if he couldn't believe what he was seeing.
After a moment, he looked up at me, his mouth opening and closing as if he were trying to find the words to speak.
But nothing came out.
From the kitchen, I heard the sound of Jason quietly gathering his keys and jacket as he headed out for the night.
I knew that he was giving us space to talk about the pregnancy on our own.
Alex set the test down on the coffee table in front of us and ran both hands through his hair.
He sat back on the couch, his elbows resting on his knees as he stared at the floor. After a long moment of silence, Alex finally looked up at me.
His eyes were glassy with emotion as he asked hoarsely, "How long have you known?"
The Roommate
Before I could answer, Alex stood up abruptly from the couch and began pacing back and forth across the small living room.
"I can't believe you didn't tell me sooner," he said, his voice a mix of hurt and confusion.
"I was scared, Alex," I replied softly, my eyes following his every move.
He stopped pacing and turned to face me, his expression softening. "We should have faced this together from the start."
