"The annual four legged rodeo is off to a start with the first pair of riders and horses competing," the announcer says as I run past the finish line on all fours with my best friend, Jake, riding on my back.
We’re in the lead by more than thirty seconds over the second place team, so we win the first round easily.
We crawl over to the starting line and tag the next pair of riders and horses before switching positions.
Jake becomes the horse, and I’m now the rider.
I climb on top of his back while he gets into position on all fours and let out a loud whoop.
"Horse, horse, horse, ride ‘em cowboy!"
I yell loud enough for everyone to hear me as I punch my fists in the air like at a real rodeo.
The crowd cheers us on even though we’re at a men’s college with a fourlegged program where half the male students are paired up with another student as a rider and a horse with four bare human legs.
It doesn’t take long for the next group of riders and horses to cross the finish line, giving us the time we need to switch positions and tag them before they can move.
Once everybody has switched positions, the riders are announced along with their horses for the next round.
After listening to all of the announcements, I realize that Jake and I are still in first place going into the second round.
The Rodeo
The second round is about to start, and the horses are handicapped with four shots of vodka to test their coordination.
Jake takes his four shots of vodka with a grimace on his face.
His cheeks turn bright red, and he sways back and forth a little bit.
I climb on top of his back and hold on tight as the whistle blows.
We lurch forward awkwardly as Jake’s coordination falters.
His legs tangle together underneath us, causing us to stumble and nearly fall over.
The crowd laughs at us as we struggle to get into a rhythm.
"Riders, focus," Professor Benson yells out loud enough for everyone to hear him.
I grip Jake tighter with my thighs and urge him on.
We finally get into a rhythm, but it’s clumsy at best.
Despite the odds, we cross the finish line first, leaving the crowd in stunned silence.
The Rodeo
The crowd erupts into cheers and applause as we cross the finish line.
I slide off Jake’s back, and he wobbles around a little bit.
His cheeks are bright red from exertion and vodka.
Professor Benson approaches us with a nod of approval.
His eyes twinkle with amusement as he hands us each a bottle of water.
I take a long drink of water, feeling it soothe my dry throat.
Jake grins at me, shaking his head in disbelief.
"Can’t believe we pulled that off," he chuckles.
I lean closer to him, whispering in his ear, "You did great, partner."
Jake smirks, wiping sweat from his brow.
"Thanks, but did you hear what Professor Benson said about the final round?"
I raise an eyebrow, curiosity piqued. "No, what’s the twist this time?"
