the daughter looked with fascination at the cleaning maidbot
Eliza Scott
She is a young girl who has grown up in a world of advanced technology. She is curious, imaginative, and observant. Eliza is fascinated by the maids and their robots, which fascinate her. She often daydreams about having a maidservant like the ones from her favorite books. Eliza's parents are divorced, and she lives with her father. She enjoys spending time with her grandfather, who tells her stories of the past.
Grandfather
He is Eliza's loving grandfather who works as a mechanic. He is practical, witty, and nostalgic. Grandfather loves to share stories with Eliza, often regaling her with tales of his past. He takes her on adventures around the city, showing her the world beyond her bubble. His relationship with Eliza is close, and he treats her like a daughter. Grandfather values tradition and often talks about how things have changed.
Maude
She is the head housekeeper and a longtime employee of the Scott household. She is authoritative, efficient, and caring. Maude has been working for Eliza's father for over ten years and has raised her own children in the city. She manages the household staff with ease and takes care of Eliza when she visits. Her relationship with Eliza is one of mutual respect and affection, though Maude often scolds her to behave properly.
I watched the maidservant and her robot, fascinated.
The maid was about my mother's age, maybe a little older, and like the one in my favorite book, she had a kind smile and a gentle face.
The robot was smaller than the one in the commercial I had seen on the net.
Its round body shone with a dazzling light, and it moved quietly, not disturbing anyone as it cleaned the floor.
The maidservant's eyes sparkled as she smiled at me.
"Hello!"
I said, waving my hand at her.
"Hello, Miss Eliza. Nice to meet you."
She saluted me, and then she turned to look at her robot.
"Vera, come here!"
The robot stopped in front of her and waited for further instructions.
"Cleaner," she said, holding out a small box toward the robot.
The robot took the box from her hand and opened it with its mechanical arm.
Inside the box were various cleaning tools: a duster, a sponge, and a brush.
The robot equipped itself with the sponge and began to clean the windows.
The maidservant smiled at me again before leaving with her robot.
I stared after them, daydreaming about having a maidservant like that.
If only I could have one just like in my favorite books!
I followed the maidbot around the house, mimicking its movements.
When Vera wiped the windows in precise circular motions, I grabbed a tissue and copied her technique on the glass coffee table.
The robot paused its work, its sensors detecting my presence.
I straightened my back like Vera did, trying to match her perfect posture.
Ralph noticed and chuckled, but I ignored him, focused on mastering the exact angle of Vera's mechanical arms as she dusted the shelves.
I even tried to walk like her—quietly gliding across the floor with grace.
When Vera entered cleaning mode in the kitchen, I snuck in behind her and grabbed a spare cleaning cloth from under the sink.
The robot turned its head toward me, and for a moment, our eyes met.
I froze, unsure if I had been caught.
"You're quite the little helper, aren't you?" the maidservant said, her voice warm with amusement.
"I just wanted to see how Vera does it," I replied, feeling a bit sheepish.
The maidservant knelt beside me, whispering conspiratorially, "Well, between us, she's not just any robot—she's got a secret upgrade."
I edged closer, intrigued.
Ralph, who was kneeling beside the kitchen counter, leaned in as well, his voice dropping to a whisper.
"Vera can sense human emotions now. Watch this."
He placed his hand on Vera's metallic surface, and the robot hummed softly.
Its exterior panels shifted from their usual blue to a warm amber color.
"See? She knows we're excited," Ralph said, his eyes twinkling.
I reached out hesitantly, my small hand trembling slightly.
Ralph guided it toward Vera's smooth casing.
His calloused fingers brushed against mine as he positioned my palm flat against the robot's side.
The robot's surface pulsed gently beneath my hand, a silent acknowledgment of our shared wonder.
While Ralph showed me more of Vera's features, I noticed that the panels on her back shifted from blue to a deep purple when she detected my growing curiosity.
"Can Vera do other things besides cleaning?"
I asked, my voice filled with hope.
"Like dancing or playing games?"
Ralph hesitated, glancing at the maidservant.
"Well, she's not exactly programmed for that."
"But can she try?"
I pleaded, my eyes wide with excitement.
The maidservant smiled kindly at me.
"I'm not sure, dear. Vera's main job is to help us keep the house clean."
"Please," I begged, tugging gently on Ralph's sleeve.
"Just once."
He sighed, but his eyes betrayed a hint of amusement.
"Fine. Let's see what we can do."
He turned to Vera and spoke in a commanding tone.
"Vera, perform a task for our guest."
The robot beeped in response and began to move its mechanical arms in a fluid motion.
To my surprise, it started folding a napkin into a simple animal shape.
My eyes widened as I watched the intricate folds take form.
"Wow," I breathed.
"She can make things!"
Ralph chuckled.
"Yes, she can. But remember, it's just a simple task."
I couldn't contain my excitement any longer.
"Can she make something more complicated? Like a bird or a rabbit?"
Ralph raised an eyebrow.
"I'm not sure. That might be beyond her capabilities."
But I was determined. I dashed out of the kitchen and into my father's study, searching for something more challenging for Vera to create.
My eyes landed on my father's expensive silk handkerchief lying on his desk.
It was delicate and intricately embroidered with patterns of gold and silver threads.
Without hesitation, I grabbed it and rushed back to the kitchen, where Ralph and the maidservant were still waiting with Vera.
"Here," I said breathlessly, holding out the handkerchief to Ralph.
"Tell Vera to make something with this."
Ralph's eyes widened in surprise as he took the handkerchief from me.
"Eliza, this is your father's favorite—"
"Just let her try," I interrupted him, my voice filled with anticipation.
Ralph looked uncertain but eventually handed the handkerchief to Vera.
Vera's mechanical fingers deftly transformed the silk into a magnificent, lifelike crane, leaving us all speechless.
