MidReal Story

The Rivers Family

Scenario:Alice Rivers had always stood out—not just for her wavy red hair or the foggy blue of her eyes, not even for the way her skin seemed to reflect moonlight itself. People often asked her, “Are you always this pale?” as if she had a choice. Freckles painted her arms and face like the stars she used to wish on as a child, lying awake at night with a strange sense she was meant for something more. She didn’t know yet that she was pregnant. And she didn’t know what that would awaken in her. Her life, though a little chaotic, was full of love. Her husband, Noah, was her anchor—a quiet, tender soul with a sharp emo edge. His crystal-blue eyes always looked like they held secrets, but when he smiled (rare and real), it was like the world got a little softer. His pale skin and shaggy brown hair only added to the gentle mystery of him, and he wore black like a second skin. Noah was transgender, and while his journey hadn’t been easy, he carried his scars like armor. Alice loved every part of him. Surrounding her was a mismatched crew of girls who made her laugh, scream, cry, and feel alive: Daisy, who could throw a punch and a tantrum in equal measure but would defend Alice with a fire unmatched. Isla, whose love language was snacks and soft hugs, always thinking about dinner even during disaster. Sienna, the short but mighty gymnast who moved through life with flips and kindness. Asha, who lied more than she told the truth, but somehow you always forgave her. And Violet, the wide-eyed, soft-spoken one who preferred fantasy to reality and believed in every lost cause. The day Alice found out she was pregnant, everything shifted. The world began to look... different. Brighter in places. Darker in others. Objects moved when she was upset. Animals stared too long. And the dreams—full of ancient symbols, chanting voices, and a child with glowing eyes—refused to fade. That’s when she learned the truth. She was a witch. A real one. And so was the child growing inside her. Not the fairytale kind, but the bloodline kind. The old kind. The dangerous kind. And now that her powers were awakening, something out there had taken notice. Alice Rivers had always stood out. Now, the world was about to learn why. --- Would you like to explore more about the kind of magic she and the baby have—or who or what might be after them?

People often asked me, "Are you always this pale?"
As if I had a choice.
As if I could decide to stop being what I was born to be.
"You’re so interesting," they’d say, eyes on my wavy red hair, my foggy blue eyes, the freckles that painted my arms and face like the stars I used to wish on at night.
I didn’t know yet what those wishes brought.
I didn’t know why I had always felt...off.
Like there was something more out there for me.
A reason I was here.
Something I was supposed to find or do or be.
And then I did it.
I did the thing I was meant to do.
And everything changed.
"Are you okay?"
Daisy asked me later, eyes on my hands as they shook around the white stick I held.
I couldn’t answer.
I was so far gone, staring at that plus sign, that single word that would change everything for me: pregnant.
I didn’t know yet what kind of magic the baby would have.
I didn’t know yet what kind of magic I had.
But I knew it was there—inside me, growing with each passing day, awakening as I felt the first stirrings of life inside my belly.
The first kick came when I was walking home from the grocery store with a bag of fresh fruit and a loaf of whole grain bread in my arms.
The Rivers Family
I pause on the sidewalk, shifting the grocery bag to rest against my hip.
The late afternoon sun warms my skin as another gentle flutter ripples through my abdomen.
Setting the bread on a bench, I close my eyes and press my palm flat against the curve of my stomach.
It’s different this time.
Like touching a live wire, but gentle.
A sparrow lands on the ground a few feet away from me, tilting its head to stare at me.
When I meet its gaze, it doesn’t fly away.
Instead, it hops closer, and I swear I can feel its curiosity mixing with my own.
The bird’s presence feels significant, meaningful.
"Daisy, do you ever wonder if they know?" I ask, nodding toward the sparrow.
The Rivers Family
She glances at the bird, then back at me, her voice steady. "They've always known, Alice it's us who are just starting to understand."
I swallow hard, feeling the truth of her words settle in my chest. "So, it's true then—I'm not just imagining it?"
I lean against the brick wall, my heart pounding in my chest.
The sparrow's beady eyes lock with mine, and I swear I see something there, something intelligent and knowing.
Its head tilts to one side, then the other, studying me.
The grocery bags dig into my arms as I watch it hop closer, each movement deliberate and calculated.
Daisy grabs my elbow, her voice a whisper.
"Did you hear that?"
I frown, wondering what she means.
And then the sparrow opens its beak.
A clear, bell-like voice rings out.
"Follow me."

The bird takes flight, darting down the street.
My feet move before my mind catches up.
Daisy curses under her breath, but she stays close behind me as we chase after the bird.
It weaves through the crowded streets, dodging pedestrians and cars with ease.
