"Aiko Nakamura... Why are you always the second best? I don't understand your situation. I hope next time you can get the first place, okay?"
The teacher said that to me after she praised Yuna Takahashi for being the first rank in the midterm exam.
Yuna and I had been best friends since we were in the same class until we graduated from high school.
We were both diligent, smart, and never skipped a lesson.
We also competed with each other to get the best grade in the midterm and final exams.
However, until this midterm exam, I had never beaten her.
She always became the first best student while I was the second.
I was frustrated with that, but I couldn't say anything to make her feel sad or distant from me.
I hoped that one day I could study harder to get the best grade and make her be the runner-up.
"Aiko... Are you okay? Why do you look so shocked?"
Yuna bent over and held my shoulders.
She looked worried about me.
"Y-Yeah, I'm fine."
I smiled at her and took a deep breath to calm myself down so I wouldn't look awkward in front of her.
"Really? Well, if you say so..."
She nodded and released my shoulder.
Then she put down her bag on the floor and sat beside me in the classroom that had become empty.
The Rivalry Between Us
I was fiddling with my pencil and looking at Yuna organizing her notes.
The afternoon sun was streaming through the window, creating a beautiful sight of dancing dust particles between us.
My heart was beating so fast.
I gathered all my courage to speak.
"Hey, Yuna..."
I started with a voice that was barely above a whisper.
She looked up and tilted her head curiously at me.
"Would you... would you mind studying together sometimes? I think we could both benefit from it."
I held my breath as I waited for her response.
A smile spread across her face as she reached for my hand.
The Rivalry Between Us
"I'd love that, Aiko. Let's start tomorrow after class?"
Yuna nodded and continued packing her notebooks into her bag.
She was so precise and methodical in everything she did.
The late afternoon sun was streaming through the window, casting long shadows across our desks.
I tapped my fingers nervously against my textbook as I thought about what I needed to prepare for tomorrow's study session.
When Yuna looked up, she caught my anxious expression.
The Rivalry Between Us
She reached across and squeezed my hand gently.
"We'll figure this out together," she said softly.
I nodded, but my stomach was churning with uncertainty.
As Yuna left the room, I realized that this was my chance to redefine what success meant to me.
Yuna left the classroom, leaving me behind.
I didn't want to go home yet because I was still thinking about what she had said to me.
While gathering all my things, I accidentally bumped Yuna's desk, causing a soft clicking sound.
Curious, I examined the desk more closely.
The wooden panel seemed to be slightly different from the rest of the desk.
My fingers traced the edge, feeling a slight gap.
There must be a latch there, hidden from view.
With trembling hands, I slid it open, revealing a hidden compartment beneath.
Inside was a worn leather-bound journal.
The pages were yellowed with age and held the faint scent of lavender.

I hesitated, wondering if I should open it.
But something about Yuna's words resonated within me.
She had always been there for me, supporting me when I needed it most.
I opened the journal, and a piece of paper slipped out, falling to the floor.
I picked it up, and my heart stopped.
It was a letter addressed to me.
I read the words, tears streaming down my face.
Yuna had been watching over me all this time, and I had never known.
The weight of her kindness overwhelmed me, and I felt a sense of gratitude wash over me.
I closed the journal, feeling a sense of peace settle within me.
Yuna had given me a gift, not just of her time but of her trust.
I knew that with her by my side, I could overcome anything.
As I left the classroom, I felt a newfound sense of purpose.
The Rivalry Between Us
I would work hard and prove to myself that I was capable of more than I thought.
And I would always be grateful for Yuna's unwavering support. Footsteps echoed behind me as I walked down the hallway.
I turned slowly, the journal heavy in my trembling hands, to find Yuna standing in the doorway.
Her usual warm expression was gone, replaced by an unreadable stare that pinned me in place.
The silence stretched between us as the afternoon shadows lengthened across the classroom floor.
I opened my mouth to explain, but no words came out.
Yuna took three measured steps forward, her shoes clicking against the tiles.
The journal's leather cover felt sticky against my sweating palms.
"Aiko," Yuna's voice was steady, yet there was an edge to it I hadn't heard before.
"Why did you open it?" she asked, her eyes searching mine for answers.
The Rivalry Between Us
"I... I didn't mean to invade your privacy," I stammered, my voice barely above a whisper.
