I was an ordinary university student, among the millions of students in China.
However, because of my "connection," I became a civil servant and later, through various means, I rose to the position of a provincial party secretary.
Of course, this process was not without twists and turns.
There were many who opposed me, and the most notable one was Zhang Ming.
This man was extremely ambitious and cunning; he constantly attempted to discredit me with rumors and schemes.
Once, he even managed to anger Mayor Liu, who was my connection and the greatest backer of my career.
It seemed that I would surely be fired.
But in the end, I not only avoided being fired but even climbed to higher positions.
The story began when I was still an unknown university student.
One day, I received a phone call from an unknown number while I was attending class.
The caller claimed to be a staff member of the city's human resources department.
He stated that according to the city's recruitment rules, civil servants could be directly selected from university graduates.
He asked me a few questions, such as my name, what university I attended, and my major.
After I answered his questions, he informed me that I had been selected as a civil servant and told me to come to the human resources department tomorrow for an interview.
The next day, I arrived at the human resources department as instructed.
The waiting area was a small room with cold metal chairs arranged in rows.
The fluorescent lights overhead cast harsh shadows on the walls, which were a dull gray color that seemed to absorb all the light in the room.
In front of me, a secretary sat at her desk, occasionally shuffling papers and typing on her computer.
The only sound in the room was the quiet clicking of her keyboard as she worked.
The rest of the room was eerily silent, as if the fluorescent lights had somehow sucked all the noise out of the air.
As I sat in my chair, I noticed that every now and then, someone would emerge from the interview room and leave through the door at the opposite end of the hallway.
The people who came out seemed nervous and flustered, while those who were waiting to go in seemed even more anxious.
After about half an hour, footsteps echoed down the corridor, growing louder as they approached from the far end of the hall.
I turned to look towards the corridor and saw Zhang Ming walking towards me in a black suit that looked expensive.
His black leather shoes were polished to a high shine and clicked against the tile floor as he strode towards me.
Zhang Ming stopped directly in front of my chair and looked down at me.
He was a tall man, easily over six feet, and he loomed over me with an air of superiority. He was wearing a black suit that fit him perfectly, and his white shirt was crisp and pressed.
A silver tie clip held his black tie in place, and a silver watch glinted on his wrist.
His dark hair was slicked back with some sort of styling product, and his eyes gleamed with an air of confidence that bordered on arrogance.
Zhang Ming's lips curled into a condescending smirk as he adjusted his black suit jacket.
"Welcome to the game," he said, his voice dripping with challenge.
I remained seated, refusing to give him the satisfaction of seeing me intimidated.
The secretary's typing paused as she glanced up at the two of us.
Zhang Ming continued to hover over me, his cologne wafting up into my nostrils and making my eyes water.
I noticed that his suit was the same brand that Mayor Liu favored, and I wondered if he had deliberately chosen it to try and gain an advantage.
The tension between us was palpable, and the air seemed to crackle with anticipation.
Then, just as it seemed like things were about to escalate further, footsteps echoed down the hallway once again.
This time, they were coming from the opposite direction, and they were heavier and more deliberate than before.
Zhang Ming's smirk faltered for a moment as he turned towards the sound, and then he stepped back from me with a slight bow.
The secretary stood at attention behind her desk, her eyes fixed on the figure emerging from the doorway. It was Mayor Liu, dressed in a navy blue suit that seemed tailored to perfection.
His silver hair was slicked back with a hint of grey at the temples, and his dark eyes gleamed with a sense of authority that was impossible to ignore.
He strode towards us with a purposeful stride, his black leather shoes clicking against the tile floor.
