My name is Kenzi, and I love horses more than anything else in the world.
I have an older brother named Braxton who thinks it’s funny to call me horse girl all the time.
I guess it kind of fits since we live on a farm where we breed and sell horses, but I don’t think it’s funny at all.
I mean, what’s wrong with loving horses?
They are beautiful, kind, smart, and amazing animals.
I’ve been riding since I was two years old, and my dream is to become a professional horse rider.
I compete in jumping events, and one day I hope to be good enough to go to the Olympics.
My brother Braxton is eight years older than me.
Right now he’s away at college learning how to become an accountant so he can work with our dad to keep track of all the money from the farm.
Braxton isn’t like other guys I know.
Even though he likes to tease me and call me names, he’s still my brother and I love him no matter what.
When he’s home from college on breaks, he always checks in on me whether I want him to or not.
The Riding Series
I lead Storm, my favorite mare, out to the practice course I set up in the east field.
The morning dew dampens my boots as we walk past the wooden fences.
I’ve got six jumps set up today, ranging from two and a half feet to four feet high.
The four-foot jump still makes my heart race a little, but I know Storm can handle it.
We warm up with some basic exercises, and then I guide her through the course.
The Riding Series
Her hooves thunder against the ground as we approach the first jump.
We clear it easily, and I lean forward a little, keeping our rhythm.
I guide her through a series of tight turns between jumps, her hooves kicking up clumps of dirt.
The second jump looms ahead - a solid wooden oxer set at three feet.
I adjust my position, gripping with my knees while keeping my hands soft on the reins.
Storm's ears prick forward, showing her focus on the approaching obstacle.
Her muscles bunch beneath me as she lengthens her stride.
Three strides out, I can feel her gathering herself.
Two strides.
One.I shift my weight slightly forward, preparing for takeoff.
"Hey, Kenzi!" Braxton's voice calls out from the fence line, startling me just as Storm launches into the air.
"What are you doing here?" I ask, trying to steady Storm on the landing.
The Riding Series
"I came to tell you that Dad wants you to ride in the regional qualifiers next month; he thinks you're ready."
I dismount to talk to him, and he leans against the fence.
Storm grazes on the grass nearby as I listen to what he has to say.
Dad has it all planned out.
He's going to trailer Storm and me to the competition site a few days early so we can get used to the arena.
I feel my stomach churn at the thought of competing at such a high level.
The autumn breeze picks up, rustling through the dried corn stalks in the adjacent field.
I reach for Storm's reins, ready to lead her back to the jump course.
But before I can grab them, a strong gust tears through the practice area.
The metal pole of the highest jump crashes down with a sharp clang.
Storm's ears pin back, her muscles tensing beneath her gleaming coat.

"Braxton, I don't know if I'm ready for this," I confess, my voice barely above a whisper.
"You've been ready for a long time, Kenzi," he replies, his eyes steady and reassuring.
"But what if I mess up?" I ask, glancing nervously at the fallen pole.
I grip Storm's reins tighter, feeling her muscles twitch beneath my palm as we approach the fallen pole.
My boots sink into the muddy grass with each step while I guide her around the scattered pieces of the course.
The wind continues to whip across the field, making Storm's mane dance wildly.
Braxton follows behind us, still talking about the competition details, but I tune him out and focus on resetting the course.
I lift the heavy pole back onto its cups, my arms straining slightly from the effort.
As I finish, Storm nudges my shoulder with her nose - a familiar gesture that always seems to steady my nerves.
With a newfound sense of determination, I consider mounting again.
"Kenzi, you know you're not alone in this," Braxton says, his voice cutting through the wind.
"Yeah, but it's not just about me; it's about Storm too," I reply, glancing at her as she snorts softly.
"And she's ready too," Braxton assures, nodding towards Storm with a confident smile.
