Ren Qingzhou's team from Shanghai No. 1 Institute had been leading in all aspects throughout the first three quarters of the year.
As per their company's convention, they were awarded a trip abroad.
After some discussion, they decided on Thailand.
The day before their departure, I received an anonymous email warning me not to play a match against the Thai team.
The email stated that they had set a trap and that it would be impossible for us to win.
Upon seeing the email, I was utterly perplexed, and it suddenly occurred to me that it might be the work of my colleague and friend, Zhang Yuanba.
He then reluctantly confessed that he had arranged for a football match with the Thai branch.
The reason lies in the rumors surrounding Ah Hanlai, the leader of the Thai subsidiary, who has gained notoriety for his discrimination against Chinese employees.
Zhang Yuanba wanted to give them a lesson and teach them a lesson.
Regarding this email, he laughed and said it was merely a psychological tactic, aimed at unsettling our mindset before the competition.
He asked me what my thoughts were.
"I told him I had no thoughts on the matter; this was his competition, and it had nothing to do with me."
He also mentioned that the company's president, Mr. Zhang, was very pleased with our performance and wanted us to participate in the match.
Zhang Yuanba, growing anxious about my reluctance to join the match, explained that Mr. Li, who manages company relationships, fully supports this friendly game.
He said that the team-building trip to Thailand during a tough period for the company was meant to boost morale and foster unity among employees.
I listened as he elaborated on Mr. Li's perspective: "This is an excellent opportunity to strengthen ties between branches."
I sit in the hotel lobby, sipping a cold drink, watching Zhang Yuanba pace nervously.
He keeps glancing at me, hoping I'll change my mind about the match.
The rest of our team lounges nearby, chatting and laughing, unaware of the tension between us.
Zhang Yuanba approaches again, pleading for my participation, citing the team's morale and the company's expectations.
I firmly reiterate my stance, emphasizing my need for rest.
He sighs, defeated, and walks away to organize the team without me.
I watch as our group exits the airport terminal, scanning for Chu Peng's familiar face among the crowd.
Instead, a slim Thai man in a crisp suit approaches us, introducing himself as A Han Lai's assistant.
He explains Chu Peng's absence with rehearsed politeness, citing "unforeseen obligations" that require his attention.
Something feels off about his explanation, but the other team members don't seem to notice, eager to pile into the waiting van with their luggage.
As we drive through Bangkok's busy streets toward the hotel, I pull out my phone and try calling Chu Peng.
No answer.
I approach Ahanlai's assistant in the hotel lobby after our team settles in.
He's typing on his laptop at a corner table, deliberately avoiding eye contact.
When I sit down across from him, he shifts uncomfortably but maintains his polite smile.
I ask directly about Chu Peng's whereabouts, noting how unusual it is for our liaison to miss greeting an important team from headquarters.
The assistant's smile falters as he fumbles through another excuse about urgent business meetings.
"Look," I say, leaning in closer, "we both know something's not right here. What's really going on?"
The assistant's face shows a flicker of relief before he regains his composure.
"Please, Mr. Li, you must understand—"
"Mr. Li!"
We both turn to see A Han Lai striding toward us, wearing an expensive suit and a practiced smile.
He extends a hand, and I stand up from the table, maintaining my composure despite my growing suspicions.
"A pleasure to finally meet you in person," A Han Lai says in perfect Mandarin.
"I trust you've settled into your rooms comfortably?"
"Yes, thank you," I reply, shaking his hand firmly.
"We appreciate the hospitality."
A Han Lai beams with pride.
"Tonight, we have prepared a special welcome dinner for your team. Please, come with me."
He leads us toward the grand ballroom, where traditional Thai dancers and musicians are already performing.
The room is filled with the aroma of exotic spices and delicacies.
A Han Lai gestures for us to follow him to the table where our teammates are already seated.
"We have prepared an exquisite selection of dishes for you," he explains, listing off rare delicacies like bird's nest soup and abalone.
As our teammates gather their belongings and follow A Han Lai into the ballroom, I notice his assistant quickly slipping away during the commotion.
I quietly follow the assistant, determined to uncover the truth.
