I was born in a Chinese community, but I became a Muslim revert.
This made me want to learn more about Islam and how I could be a better Muslim.
Since I didn't know where to start, I decided to speak with Imam Hassan from my local mosque.
"Assalamu alaikum," I said as I entered the imam's office.
"Walaikum assalam," he replied.
"Peace be upon you."
"Peace be upon you too," I said.
"You are Amina Li, correct? The one who converted to Islam last year?"
"Yes, that's me."
I nodded.
"Why did you come to see me today, Amina?"
I was surprised he knew my name, but I was also glad since it saved time.
"I wanted some guidance on how I could be a better Muslim."
"There is no better way to start than performing your daily salat."
I already did that, but I didn't want to tell him.
"I also do that, but..."
I paused.
"How can I deepen my faith in Islam?"
"That's a great question."
Imam Hassan smiled.
"There are many ways you can do that, but first, you must learn Arabic since the Holy Quran is written in that language."
"I see."
I nodded thoughtfully.
"How can I do that?"

I hesitated before asking, "Is it possible for you to recommend an Arabic tutor from the mosque?"
Imam Hassan nodded.
"I can do that. There is a young woman who teaches Arabic classes in the evenings."
"She's patient and skilled."
"Thank you. I'll meet with her after the next prayer session."
I left the mosque and saw Ling Wong waiting for me outside.
"Assalamu alaikum," I said.
"Walaikum assalam," she replied.
"How was your meeting with Imam Hassan?"
"It went well. I'll start taking Arabic lessons."
"That's great news. Do you want me to accompany you to the first class?"
"That would be helpful."

Ling smiled warmly.
