I really need to take a piss.
Like, really need to.
My bladder is telling me it’s do or die time.
Unfortunately, I am on a bus with my entire high school.
I am on a field trip to Washington D.C. with everyone I know.
And I am not about to ask the bus driver to pull over at the next available rest stop, because I am embarrassed.
I don’t want anyone to know that I waited too long and now my bladder is going to rupture.
Because that would be humiliating.
So I sit in my seat next to my best friend, Matt, and try to hold it.
And try.
And try some more.
But it only gets harder.
And harder still when Matt decides it would be funny to bounce up and down in his seat, causing the bus to jiggle and bump along the road.
"Stop," I hiss at him.
"Alex, what is wrong?"
Matt asks.
"I really need to pee."
"Ah," he says.
"Hold your horses, buddy. We are almost there."
"We" being the entire school, not Matt and myself.
We are on a big coach bus, the kind that has reclining seats and Greyhound would use if they were still relevant in the modern world.
The Reluctant Romeo
I squeeze my thighs together, watching through gritted teeth as the bus crawls into the rest stop.
Matt keeps snickering beside me, making water sounds with his mouth.
The bus lurches to a stop, and I feel my bladder protest.
Students start filing out row by row, but I am frozen in place.
I can’t move until it’s my turn, because if I do, I will pee myself.
When our row’s turn comes, I stand up carefully, legs stiff.
Walking down the aisle is like crossing a minefield.
Each step is a potential disaster.
Other students push past me, but I can’t go any faster than this.
When I get to the steps that lead down to the ground, I pause for a moment and calculate the best way to get down them without having an accident.
The Reluctant Romeo
Gripping the handrail, I test my weight on the first step.
My bladder screams in protest at the slight jostle.
Behind me, Matt snickers and pokes me in the back.
I shoot him a desperate glare over my shoulder, then turn back to the task at hand.
One step down, then another.
The concrete landing seems miles away.
My thighs are trembling with the effort of holding it in.
Halfway down, I stop and press my legs together as a wave of urgency hits me.
"Alex, you okay?"
Coach Wilson calls from behind me.
The Reluctant Romeo
Gripping the handrail with white knuckles, I finally reach the last step and plant both feet on solid ground.
The bathroom entrance is visible across the rest stop parking lot, about fifty yards away.
I take small, rigid steps, my thighs pressed together as Matt trails behind me making exaggerated swooshing noises.
A car honks as I shuffle across the crosswalk, and I freeze mid-step.
The sudden jolt makes my bladder spasm.
The Reluctant Romeo
Coach Wilson calls out asking if I need help, which only adds to my mortification.
I clench my fists and make a break for it, ignoring everything but the bathroom door ahead.
