After walking for hours, Tim and I finally reached the top of a hill and saw a house in the distance.
Thank God!
We were in the middle of nowhere, and I thought we'd have to spend the night under the stars.
I wasn't too keen on that, considering my experiences with the Taliban.
I'd rather sleep in a ditch than have someone sneak up on me again.
Not exactly the most pleasant thought.
"Hey, look," Tim said.
"A house. Maybe they have food. I'm starving."
I nodded and smiled.
"Yeah, and maybe a phone. I can't reach mine. Must be out of range."
"Same here."
"Let’s hope they have a landline."
We made our way down the hill and along a dirt track that led to the house.
As we approached, I noticed something strange.
There were no cars outside, no sign of life anywhere.
But there was smoke coming out of the chimney.
I looked at Tim and he shrugged.
He also thought it was strange but didn't want to comment until we reached the door.
When we did, I knocked and waited for someone to answer.
It took a few minutes, but then it opened.
A woman stood before us with a look of surprise on her face.
"Hello," I said.
"Sorry to disturb you. Our car broke down and—"
"Oh, hello," she said with a smile.
The Rejuvenated Princess
"Come in. I wasn't expecting visitors."
She stepped aside to let us in, closing the door behind us.
We found ourselves in a dimly lit hallway with wooden floorboards creaking under our feet.
The woman led us through the house, which was filled with antique furniture and faded photographs on the walls.
But there was no sign of modern technology anywhere.
No phones, no computers, not even a television set.
Tim followed closely behind me, his boots leaving muddy prints on the floor.
The woman didn't seem to mind, though.
She just kept walking until we reached a kitchen at the back of the house.
There was a pot of stew simmering on an old wood-burning stove.
The Rejuvenated Princess
She stirred it slowly with a spoon while I looked around for a phone.
"Excuse me," I said.
"Do you have a phone we could use?"
"Oh, yes," she replied without looking up from her cooking.
"There's one in the living room."
She pointed down the hallway.
"But first, let's get you something to eat. You must be hungry after your journey."
I hesitated for a moment but realized that food sounded good too.
My stomach growled loudly, betraying my urgency about the phone.
The woman smiled knowingly and ladled out two bowls of stew before setting them on the table. "Here you go," she said, pulling out chairs for us to sit down.
"You boys must be hungry. Eat up!"
I thanked her and took a seat while Tim did the same next to me.
The stew smelled delicious and tasted even better when I took my first bite.
It was warm and comforting, just what I needed after being stranded in the woods all day long.
As we ate, I glanced over at Tim and noticed that he seemed nervous about something.
He kept looking around the room as if he expected someone to jump out from behind a corner at any moment.
I knew he had been through some tough times during his deployment, but this behavior was new to me.
Maybe he was just anxious about being in an unfamiliar place without any technology nearby?
Tim leaned in closer, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Did you notice the photos on the wall? They’re all of the same woman, but she looks exactly like her."
The Rejuvenated Princess
I paused mid-bite, my heart skipping a beat. "You mean... she hasn’t aged a day?"
After dinner, the woman led us upstairs to two separate bedrooms.
The stairs creaked beneath our feet as we followed her down a narrow hallway lined with even more photographs.
I wondered how many rooms were in this house and why there were so many pictures of the same woman everywhere.
It felt strange, but I tried not to think too much about it.
We needed a place to stay for the night, and she seemed friendly enough.
I entered my room and found a small bed with a simple white sheet on it.
The walls were bare except for one framed picture hanging above the headboard.
It showed a young girl sitting in a field of flowers, smiling brightly at the camera.
She looked happy and carefree, surrounded by nature's beauty.
I set my bag down on the floor and walked over to the window to look outside.
The Rejuvenated Princess
The sky was darkening quickly now, casting shadows across the landscape below.
A light breeze rustled through the leaves of nearby trees, creating an eerie sound that echoed through the air. As I stood there gazing out into the distance, I noticed something peculiar.
There was a faint scent coming from somewhere in the room—a sweet smell like warm milk mixed with honey.
It reminded me of childhood memories spent playing outside during summer days when everything felt fresh and innocent.
But here, in this strange old house, it seemed out of place somehow.
I turned away from the window and lay down on the bed, feeling tired after our long journey through the woods.
As soon as my head hit the pillow, my eyelids grew heavy and I couldn't keep them open anymore.
It was as if someone had drugged me with sleepiness all at once.
I heard footsteps outside my door and then Tim's voice calling out to me softly through the thin wall separating our rooms. "Hey," he said quietly.
"Are you awake?"
I wanted to respond but couldn't find any strength left within me to speak or move even an inch off that bed.
All I could do was listen as his door closed shut again and silence fell over everything once more. Suddenly, I heard soft humming coming from next door—Tim singing some tune under his breath while he settled into his own bed for the night.
It sounded peaceful enough until suddenly it stopped abruptly without warning. My heart raced faster than ever before as fear gripped me tightly around my chest like cold fingers squeezing hard against my ribs until they hurt too much to breathe properly anymore. What happened?
Why did he stop singing?
Was someone else there with him now?
The Rejuvenated Princess
"Tim," I called out, my voice shaky. "Are you okay?"
There was a pause before his voice came back, barely audible. "I think... I saw her in the mirror, but she wasn't there when I turned around."
My blood ran cold as I sat up, suddenly wide awake. "What do you mean? Like a reflection?"
