It was the year 2023 when portals to different dungeons started to appear all over the world.
At first, no one knew what they were, where they came from, and what was inside of them.
Many believed that they were just "portals to another dimension" and paid no mind to them.
That was until people started to disappear.
They would go in and never come back out.
This is what sparked my curiosity.
I wanted to know what was inside, where the people who went in went, and why no one could come back out.
So I did what any normal person would do.
I went to my local dungeon, which happened to be about a mile away from my house, and peeked inside.
As soon as I did, I felt myself being sucked in.
I tried to stop myself from going in, but it was too late.
I had already crossed the threshold and fell to the ground.
When I stood up, I saw that it was pitch black with only a small amount of light coming from the portal behind me.
I reached into my pocket and grabbed my lighter, lighting it.
With the small amount of light my lighter gave off, I was able to see that I was in some type of hallway.
It was made out of stone and had old torches on the walls.
I walked down the hallway until I came across a room that had a staircase going down and one going up.
I walked over to one of the torches and held my lighter's flame up to it.
The wood was old and dusty, and the flame from my lighter was not strong enough to light it.
I grabbed the torch and pulled it out of its metal bracket, which was rusted and old.
I held the torch in one hand and my lighter in the other, bringing the flame to the head of the torch.
The material that was wrapped around the top of the torch caught fire almost instantly, and I quickly pulled my hand away.
The flame was big and bright, casting shadows on the walls as it danced in the air.
I held my breath as I waited for the flame to die down a bit so that I could hold it without burning myself.
As I waited, I looked around and saw that there were carvings on all of the walls.
They were symbols and patterns that I did not recognize, but they were beautiful nonetheless.
After a few minutes, the flame had died down enough for me to hold it without burning myself.
As soon as I picked up the torch, a gust of stale air blew through the room, making the flame sputter a little bit.
I shielded it with my hand until it died back down. With the improved lighting, I could see both staircases more clearly now.
The one that went up was still dark, but I could see that it led to a door at the top.
The one that went down was even darker than before, but I could see that it led to another door at the bottom.
I decided to go down first because I wanted to see if there was anything else on this floor before going upstairs.
As I walked down the stairs, I noticed that they were very narrow and steep.
The walls were made of stone, and there were cobwebs hanging from them.
When I got to the bottom of the stairs, I saw that there was another door at the end of a short hallway.
It was old and rusty like all of the other doors in this place, but it looked like it hadn't been opened in years. As I walked towards the door, I noticed that there were cobwebs everywhere.
They were hanging from the ceiling and covering most of the walls.
I tried to avoid touching them as much as possible because they grossed me out so much. When I got closer to the door, I realized that it wasn't locked like all of the other ones had been so far.
I hesitated for a moment, then pushed it open to reveal the unexpected.
The door creaked open, revealing a dimly lit chamber.
The walls were adorned with flickering candles, arranged in a circular pattern that seemed to dance in the faint breeze that swept through the room.
As I stepped inside, my lighter's flame wavered, casting eerie shadows on the stone floor.
In the center of the room stood a stone pedestal, upon which rested an ancient book bound in worn leather.
Its pages were yellowed and crackling with age, as if they held secrets that only the bravest of souls dared to uncover.
As I cautiously approached the pedestal, my footsteps echoed against the cold stone walls, sending shivers down my spine.
The air was heavy with an otherworldly presence, as if the very essence of the room was alive and watching my every move.
I could feel eyes upon me, though I saw no one.
The shadows in the corners seemed to writhe and twist like living things, their darkness seeping into my very soul. Suddenly, a soft rustling sound came from behind the pedestal, causing me to freeze mid-step.
My heart pounded in my chest as I strained to see what had made the noise.
And then, like a specter emerging from the depths of darkness, a figure materialized before my very eyes.
It was shrouded in a hooded cloak that obscured its features, leaving only an unsettling void where its face should have been.
The figure moved with an unnerving fluidity, its steps deliberate and calculated as it glided towards me.
My breath caught in my throat as it drew nearer, its presence filling the room with an aura of foreboding and dread.
"Who dares disturb the sanctity of this chamber?" the figure intoned, its voice echoing with an ancient resonance.
"I-I'm just a curious traveler," I stammered, gripping the torch tighter as if it could shield me from whatever power this being possessed.
"Curiosity is a dangerous companion here," the figure replied, its tone softening slightly, "for within these walls lies the truth of those who vanished."
