I'm Li Mo, a freshman who works part-time on a TV set.
I play the role of a Taoist priest.
The interesting thing is that every time there's a shoot, something really happens on set.
The crew thinks I drive the evil spirit away, but actually, I don't know anything about it.
The first day I came to the TV set, everything seemed normal.
The director yelled, "Action!"
Something strange happened: the dim light suddenly became very bright.
Everyone thought I drove some evil spirit away.
The director patted me on the back and said, "Great job, Li Mo. Keep it up."
But I didn't do anything at all.
The second day, when the director yelled, "Curtain!" the curtain didn't drop.
It just stuck there in the air.
Again, everyone thought I drove something away.
The assistant director even gave me a thumbs up.
"Good job, Li!"
I was completely at a loss.
Something really happened on set?
Or was it all just in their minds?
But weird things kept happening: some actress' hair stood up by itself; someone's shirt was ripped; someone even saw a white figure...
I didn't feel anything at all.
The Reincarnated Ghost Catcher
The crew was getting more and more scared.
But they were also happy, because it made the shoot more realistic.
One day, during a break between scenes, I found the young Taoist.
He was hiding behind the equipment racks.
His hands were making some gestures, and his mouth was murmuring something.
I pretended to check my costume in the mirror.
But what I was really doing was watching his reflection.
Whenever something strange happened, his hands moved, and it stopped happening.
I watched him carefully, and then I saw it: a light fixture above Xiao Hong's head suddenly started swinging violently.
It looked like it was going to fall on her head.
The Reincarnated Ghost Catcher
But then the young Taoist whispered something, and he pointed upward.
The fixture stopped moving immediately.
Wu Peng rushed over to check the rigging of the light fixture.
There was nothing wrong with it at all.
I pretended to go to the bathroom, but I actually approached the young Taoist's hiding spot.
The Reincarnated Ghost Catcher
But he had already disappeared.
I realized then that the true power on set was not in my hands, but in the shadows where he lurked.
That night, we were shooting a scene where I did an exorcism ritual.
The crew was setting up the equipment.
The young Taoist was hiding behind the lighting rig again.
I stood in front of the camera, practicing my movements and reciting my lines.
The atmosphere was very heavy.
It felt like something was about to happen.
Suddenly, the temperature dropped.
"Quiet on set!"
Director Zhang yelled.
But before he could say "Action," I saw the young Taoist's expression change to one of alarm.
The Reincarnated Ghost Catcher
He pointed upward.
I looked up and saw some dark shapes writhing in the shadows of the ceiling beams.
The equipment started creaking ominously.
I gripped my prop sword tightly in my hand.
"Li, do you see them too?" the young Taoist whispered urgently, his eyes wide with fear.
The Reincarnated Ghost Catcher
"Yes, but what are they?" I replied, my voice barely above a whisper as I glanced nervously at the shadows.
"They're spirits trapped between worlds," he said, his voice trembling. "And they're getting stronger."
Suddenly, a bushy-tailed squirrel darted through a gap in the studio door.
It scampered across the cables and props on the floor.
It had something in its cheeks.
It looked like a collection of acorns.
The squirrel zigzagged between the crew members' legs, dropping an acorn every now and then.
"Cut!" the director yelled.
Xiao Hong squealed and pointed at the squirrel.
The squirrel scaled the lighting rig, sending more acorns raining down.
Wu Peng tried to catch them, but he kept bumping into equipment.
The dark shapes in the beams above us faded as everyone's eyes followed the squirrel's path.
