Hua Jin Zhonghua, 17, a Chinese girl.
After school, I am in the classroom alone.
The five-star red flag of our motherland is hung high on the wall of the classroom.
I like to look at it every time.
I think in my heart: if I could be a superheroine like those from foreign lands I have read about in books, that would be great!
I don't know what kind of superheroine I should be.
Is it the one with wings?
With light?
With electricity?
I don't know.
But I do know that I must be a Russian-style superheroine.
Why Russian style?
Because there are too many American superheroines, that's why!
Too many superheroines from the United States have been translated into Chinese and published in China.
So many books about them have been printed that I am already tired of seeing them.
I want to be different.
I want to be a superheroine who is not translated from any foreign books.
What should I look like?
Hmmm…
Let me think…
Oh, yes!
I know now!
I will wear a red bodysuit!
The hammer and sickle of our great central Communist Party will be printed on the upper left side of my chest, just like the red armband that Comrade Lei Feng wore.
A glossy, shiny red cape will be draped over my back.
The Red Star
I pull out my worn notebook from my school bag, flipping past pages of math equations to find a blank sheet.
The late afternoon sun streams through the classroom windows, casting a warm glow over the room.
My pencil moves with quick, excited strokes as I begin sketching.
First, I draw the bodysuit, making sure to get the tight fit just right.
My pencil moves carefully as I add the hammer and sickle emblem on the chest.
The Red Star
The cape flows from the shoulders - I shade it to show its glossy texture.
My heart beats faster as the drawing takes shape.
I add final touches to the boots and gloves, making sure the five stars are perfectly placed.
As I reach to grab my flying sketch, the red flag hanging on the wall suddenly billows outward.
The fabric unfurls, wrapping around me in a spiral.
The silk feels cool against my skin as it tightens and transforms.
My school uniform morphs into the sleek red bodysuit I had just drawn.
The hammer and sickle emblem I sketched now sits proudly on my chest.
The transformation continues - red gloves materialize on my hands, matching boots appear on my feet, and a cape settles across my shoulders.
Each piece sparkles with golden five-pointed stars.
"Jin Zhonghua!" a voice calls out, echoing through the empty classroom.
Startled, I turn to see my best friend Mei standing in the doorway, eyes wide with disbelief.
"Are you really... flying?" she asks, her voice a mix of awe and concern.
The Red Star
Still floating a few inches off the ground, I try to calm my racing heart and make sense of what's happening.
Mei remains frozen at the doorway, her schoolbag dangling limply from one hand.
I need to test if these powers are real.
My eyes fix on the heavy wooden desk beside me - the same one I've sat at all semester.
Slowly, I reach out with both hands, gripping the edge of the table.
The Red Star
The metal and wood feel solid under my red gloves.
Taking a deep breath, I bend my knees slightly and pull upward, preparing myself for the weight.
My red gloves contrast against the dull gray metal of the desk frame.
Taking a deep breath, I slowly straighten my legs and pull upward.
The desk rises smoothly from the floor as if it were made of cardboard.
My muscles feel no strain at all.
Mei gasps and stumbles backward into the hallway as I hold the desk above my head with one hand.
The Red Star
The familiar weight of textbooks and papers means nothing now - it's as light as a feather.
Testing my control, I carefully rotate the desk 360 degrees while maintaining perfect balance.
