Julia
All my life I could be defined in three words: fiery red hair.
Well, that and the fact that I had no magic.
Which was weird considering both my parents had had it.
But that was a thing I never let get to me.
Instead, I focused on other things.
Like sports.
Mostly those that had to do with running, jumping, climbing, and basically anything that required a good physique and a strong heart.
Which I happened to have thanks to my love of adventure and the outdoors.
So, when I turned 23, I was as healthy as any young athlete could be.
And that’s pretty damn healthy.
But little did I know that all of that was about to change.
Because life liked to fuck with you sometimes.
And it liked to do so in the most unexpected ways.
I happened to wake up that morning in a routine I was used to.
I did some yoga, had some coffee and toast, and then went for a run in the woods nearby my place.
I was feeling great, the fresh air doing wonders for my body and mind, when I realized I had gotten lost.
I wasn’t too worried at first.
After all, I had been in worse situations before and come out on top just fine.
But it soon became clear that this wasn’t like anything I had experienced before.
The trees seemed to be getting taller by the minute.
The Red Haired Witch
And the forest seemed to be getting denser.
I slowed my pace, trying to get my bearings.
But it was no use.
I had never seen trees like these before.
They were so tall they seemed to touch the sky.
And the leaves were a weird color, almost like they were glowing.
I was about to turn around and head back when I saw a flash of movement out of the corner of my eye.
Someone was darting between the massive trunks, their long hair flying behind them.
I crouched down behind a fallen log, my runner’s instincts kicking in as I watched the figure move through the forest.
It was a woman, her hair flowing behind her like a river of silver.
The Red Haired Witch
She moved with an inhuman grace, her feet barely touching the ground as she ran through the forest.
I couldn’t see her face, but I could tell she was beautiful.
And she was definitely not human.
She hadn’t seen me yet, and I debated whether to call out or follow her silently.
But before I could make a decision, my weight shifted and a twig snapped beneath my foot.
The Red Haired Witch
The elf whirls around, her eyes widening as they meet mine.
Her gaze pierced through me, and in that moment, I knew everything was about to change.
I held my breath, watching as the silver-haired woman approached my hiding spot.
She moved with an unnatural fluidity, her feet barely touching the forest floor as she glided towards me.
The leaves above us cast a strange, ethereal glow on her face, illuminating her angular features and pointed ears.
There was no doubt in my mind that she was not human.
She stopped three feet from my log, her slender hand extended in front of her, palm up.
The Red Haired Witch
"You can come out now," she said in accented English, her voice melodic yet firm.
"I am Astrid, and you are clearly not from these woods."
My muscles tensed as I weighed my options.
The crouching position was starting to ache in my muscles, and I slowly rose from behind the log, dead leaves and bark crumbling beneath my running shoes.
Astrid’s silver hair seemed to shimmer in the strange light, creating a halo around her face.
Her extended hand remained steady, patient.
I cleared my throat, dry from tension, and managed to speak.
"I’m Julia," I replied, giving a slight nod while keeping a safe distance from her.
The Red Haired Witch
My eyes darted between her pointed ears and the unfamiliar forest path behind her, mentally marking potential escape routes.
I shifted my weight forward, the gravelly forest floor crunching beneath my feet.
Astrid’s hand remained extended, fingers relaxed and palm up in a welcoming gesture.
The luminescence from the forest canopy danced across her silver hair, creating an otherworldly pattern that seemed to hypnotize me.
I shook off the trance and managed to speak again, my voice steadier than I expected.
"What do you want from me?"
The Red Haired Witch
The question hung in the air between us, Astrid’s expression shifting from welcoming to something more serious.
"I seek your help," Astrid replied, her voice softening but urgency clear in her eyes.
"There's a darkness spreading through these woods, and only an outsider can break the curse."
My heart raced as I processed her words, realizing that my accidental detour might have been fate all along.
I took a deep breath, the air filled with the sweet scent of blooming trees and damp earth.
I moved forward cautiously, my running shoes crushing twigs and leaves beneath my feet.
The luminescence from the forest canopy created an ethereal glow on Astrid’s silver hair, making it shimmer like moonlight on rippling water.
Five feet away from her, I paused.
Her outstretched hand remained steady, unwavering in its invitation.
The Red Haired Witch
The forest around us was unnaturally quiet, devoid of birdsong or rustling leaves.
The only sound was my own ragged breathing.
My muscles remained tense, ready to sprint if necessary, but something in Astrid’s steady gaze drew me closer.
I stared at her delicate fingers, still hovering in the space between us.
The strange quiet of the forest pressed against my ears, amplifying the weight of her request.
My running shoes gripped the soft earth beneath me as I shifted my weight forward.
The sweet floral scent grew stronger, enveloping me in its fragrance.
My hand moved up, hesitating for a heartbeat before clasping hers.
The Red Haired Witch
Astrid’s skin was cool and smooth, like polished stone.
