I was seventeen years old when I found it.
A red emerald, small and unassuming, tucked away in a corner of my attic.
I only stumbled upon it because I was searching for an old trunk my mother wanted to use for storage.
As soon as I touched it, I felt a weird tingling sensation.
It traveled from my fingers, down my arm, and all the way to my toes.
I couldn’t describe it, but it felt nice.
Then again, I couldn’t say I had experienced anything like it before.
The tingling feeling went away as fast as it appeared, leaving me skeptical.
Was I imagining things?
Had I really felt that, or was I just being fanciful?
I put the thought behind me and continued my search for the trunk.
When I found it and lugged it downstairs, nothing out of the ordinary happened.
I didn’t feel any weird sensations.
That red emerald was forgotten in the back of my mind until the next day at school.
It started with small things.
As I walked down the hall, a book fell off a student’s bag and landed in front of me.
Before I could react, it slid across the floor and into my hands.
A few people gasped and one girl let out a loud "Oh my god."
I looked around, confused, until I realized that everyone thought I had done that.
I hadn’t touched the book.

I stood there, frozen in the hallway, my heart pounding against my chest.
The book hit the floor with a dull thud.
It was a thick textbook, and it belonged to Sarah Chen, who was standing a few feet away from me.
She took a hesitant step forward, her eyes wide with disbelief.
I tried to act casual, shrugging my shoulders and adjusting my backpack.
But my hands were shaking.
The bell rang, making me jump.
As students shuffled to their next classes, I noticed Mr. Reed watching me from his classroom doorway.
He was our physics teacher, and he looked like he knew something I didn’t.
I hurried past him, keeping my head down.

But I could feel his eyes on me as I walked away.
As I turned the corner, I bumped into Mia.
I stumble backward, steadying myself against the wall.
Mia steps closer, her brown eyes locking onto mine with an intensity I’ve never seen before.
The hallway buzzes with distant chatter, but here, it’s just us and the weight of what she just said.
My hands are trembling – the same way they did when the book moved.
I try to speak, but my throat feels dry.

Mia glances over her shoulder at the approaching footsteps, then quickly scribbles something on a piece of paper.
She slips the folded paper into my hand, her fingers brushing against mine.
The contact sends another wave of that strange tingling through my arm, similar to when I touched the emerald.
A pencil falls from someone's desk nearby and rolls toward my feet.
I clench my fists, fighting the urge to reach out with my mind.
The pencil stops right at my shoes, and I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding.

Students shuffle past us to their next classes, but I remain rooted in place, watching Mia's retreating form.
When I finally unfold the paper, I see an address and time scrawled in hurried handwriting: "785 Oak Street, 8 PM."
I grip the note tightly and weave through the crowded hallway, following Mia's blue backpack.
Students jostle me as I push past them, but I keep my eyes locked on her retreating form.
When she turns down the science wing, I quicken my pace.
The floor suddenly feels unsteady beneath my feet, and a nearby trash can tips over without being touched.
Students jump back, pointing and whispering.
I ignore them and continue forward, my heart pounding.
Just as I'm about to call out to Mia, the bell rings.
"Mia, wait!" I call out, catching up to her just as she reaches the lab door.
She turns, her expression a mix of urgency and fear. "Did you feel it too? The energy when you touched the book?"
I nod, glancing around to make sure no one is listening. "Yeah, and it's getting stronger. What does it mean?"

She looks around the hallway, then pushes open the door to an empty classroom.
"Come on," she says, gesturing for me to follow her inside.
I check twice to make sure no one is watching us enter the room.
Once we're both inside, Mia pulls out an old leather-bound book from her backpack.
The cover is worn and cracked, the pages yellowed with age.
She opens it carefully, revealing intricate diagrams of gemstones alongside handwritten notes in faded ink.
I lean closer, my hands still trembling as I study the pages.
"Look at this," Mia whispers, pointing to a small diagram of a red gemstone that looks identical to the emerald I found in my attic.
My heart skips a beat as I reach out to touch the page.
Mia's eyes widen as she watches me.

"That's it," she says softly.
"The red emerald. My grandmother told me about it."
I glance up at her, searching for answers.
"What do you mean? How does she know about it?"
Mia hesitates, her eyes darting around the room as if she's afraid someone might be listening.
"My grandmother was part of a secret organization," she says finally.
"They called themselves the Gemkeepers."
I frown, trying to understand.
"What does that mean?" Mia points to a passage written in elegant script at the bottom of the page.
Her finger traces the words as she reads them aloud: "The Gemkeepers are sworn to protect the ancient stones, to keep their power from falling into the wrong hands."
She glances up at me, her expression serious.
"My grandmother said that these stones hold incredible power – power that could change the course of history."
As she speaks, I feel a strange tingling sensation in my fingers again, like pins and needles but stronger.
It spreads up my arm and down my spine, leaving goosebumps in its wake.
Suddenly, footsteps echo in the hallway outside our classroom door.
