Emi Tanaka: *Shrugs* Beats me, but maybe she's stressed or struggling with something. We should give her a chance to explain and maybe we can find a way to make things right.

I
introspective, and impulsive. His past relationships have been tumultuous, leading to an estranged connection with his exgirlfriend,Rie. Recently,he has rekindled feelings for Emi Tanaka,a friend of his former girlfriend. This internal conflict surfaces during a confrontation with Rie in a school gymnasium, where emotions run high but ultimately lead to reconciliation.
"Emi, what's going on here?"
Rie asked as she entered the gymnasium.
I bowed my head, not wanting to look at her.
I didn't know what to say to her.
I was speechless as I thought about how I could have hurt her and broke her trust.
"Rie, I can explain—"
I began to say, but she cut me off.
"No need to explain anything. I already know what happened," she said as she looked at me with tears in her eyes.
I felt bad for making her cry, but I didn't know what to say to make things right.
"Maybe we should talk about this privately," Emi suggested as she looked at Rie.
"Yeah… You're right," Rie said as she nodded her head.
She turned around and left the gymnasium.
"Let's go talk to her," Emi said as she started walking toward the exit of the gymnasium.
I followed her and nodded my head.
When we got out of the gymnasium, Rie was already gone.
"I'm sorry, Emi. I can't do this," I said as I looked at Emi.
"What? What are you talking about?"
Emi asked as she stopped walking and turned around to face me.
I leaned my back against the wall and looked down at the floor.
I didn't know what to say to her.
"I don't know how to explain it," I said as I looked up at her.
She was looking at me with a confused expression on her face.
"Explain what?"
The gymnasium door suddenly opened, and someone walked out.
I looked at the person and widened my eyes in surprise.
It was Jacob Appleby.
He was wearing a black fitted t-shirt and jeans.
He looked exactly like he did in the movies that Emi and I used to watch together.
Emi looked at him, and her eyes widened in surprise as well.
Jacob Appleby started walking toward us with a friendly smile on his face.
I remembered how Emi and I used to talk about him during our late-night conversations.
We would joke about meeting him someday, but we never thought that it would actually happen. Emi's hand unconsciously went up to her hair and started fixing it.
I was about to continue what I was saying when Jacob stopped in front of us and extended his hand out to us.
"Hi, I'm Jacob Appleby," he said with a friendly smile on his face.
I looked at him and noticed how his eyes were looking at Emi's figure.
I could tell that he was checking her out.
Emi looked at him and smiled back at him.
She extended her hand out to him and shook his hand.
"I'm Emi, and this is my friend," she said as she introduced us to him.
Jacob Appleby looked at me and nodded his head.
He then turned his attention back to Emi.
"It's nice to meet you, Emi. I like your tank top. It brings out your athletic build," he said as he looked at Emi's body again.
Emi's cheeks turned red as she looked down at the floor.
"Thank you," she said softly as she continued to hold onto his hand for a few seconds longer than necessary.
I looked at them and felt my stomach tighten up.
Jacob Appleby then let go of Emi's hand and took a step closer to her.
He lowered his voice and said, "I've seen you around campus before, but I never had the chance to talk to you. I'm glad that I finally got the chance to meet you."
Emi looked up at him and smiled shyly.
"Me too," she said softly. Jacob Appleby then continued talking to Emi in a low voice so that only she could hear what he was saying.
I couldn't hear what he was saying, but I could tell that it was something that made Emi blush even more than before.
She giggled and playfully touched his arm with her hand.
I leaned my back against the wall and looked at them.
Jacob Appleby took another step closer to Emi.
He was practically whispering in her ear now.
Emi's hand continued to play with her hair as she looked up at him with a smile on her face.
Their bodies were angled toward each other now, creating a bubble that excluded me from their conversation.
I clenched my hands into fists and looked down at the floor.
"I just moved into a new apartment downtown. It has a great view of the city," Jacob Appleby said as he looked at Emi's face.
"You should come check it out sometime."
Emi's eyes widened with interest as she looked up at him.
"Really?"
Jacob Appleby nodded his head and smiled.
"Yeah. I can show you around sometime if you want."
Emi then looked down at her phone and checked the time.
"Oh, I have to go. I promised my friend that I would meet her in an hour," she said as she started walking toward the exit of the gymnasium.
I watched her leave, feeling the weight of my unspoken words settle heavily in the silence she left behind.
I leaned my back against the wall and continued to look at the floor.
I could still hear the sound of Emi's footsteps as she walked away from me.
I didn't know what to say to her.
I didn't know how to explain it to her.
Jacob Appleby then turned his attention to me.
He was still smiling, but his eyes had a calculating look in them.
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a black business card.
He extended it out to me with a friendly smile on his face.
"Your background in finance caught my attention," he said as he looked at me with a serious expression on his face.
"I'm looking for someone with your skills."
I looked at him and hesitated for a moment before taking the card from him.
It was a sleek black business card with gold lettering embossed on it.
The card felt heavy in my hand as I read the information printed on it. "Appleby Industries," I said as I looked up at him with a confused expression on my face.
Jacob Appleby nodded his head and smiled.
"Yes. My father is the CEO of Appleby Industries. We're looking for someone to fill a junior executive position. The job would involve working closely with my father and other members of our team."
I looked at him and raised an eyebrow.
"What makes you think that I'm interested in this position?"
Jacob Appleby smiled again and said, "I've done my research on you. I know that you have a strong background in finance and that you're looking for a job. I think that you would be a good fit for this position."
I looked at him and nodded my head slowly.
"I see," I said softly as I continued to look at the business card in my hand.
Jacob Appleby then continued talking about the position and what it entailed.
He explained that the job would require me to work long hours and travel frequently, but that it would also come with a competitive salary and benefits package. As he spoke, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease growing inside of me.
There was something about Jacob Appleby that didn't feel right, something that made me question whether this job offer was genuine or not.
But despite my reservations, I found myself listening intently to what he had to say, weighing the pros and cons of taking this opportunity.
After Jacob Appleby finished explaining the details of the job, he smiled at me again and said, "So what do you say? Are you interested in this position?"
"Why me?" I finally asked, unable to shake the feeling that there was more to his offer than met the eye.
Jacob's smile widened slightly, a hint of something unreadable flickering in his gaze.
"Let's just say I have a knack for spotting potential," he replied smoothly, his eyes never leaving mine.
I stared at the black business card in my hand, running my thumb over the raised gold lettering while Jacob waited expectantly.
The fluorescent gym lights cast harsh shadows across his face, accentuating the sharp planes of his features.
His eyes remained steady on me, unnervingly so.
My mind raced through the events of the day - Rie's tears, Emi's flirtatious giggles with Jacob, and now this too-perfect job offer.
Something screamed at me to walk away, but then I thought of Emi's retreating back and how this position could change everything.
"I'll take it," I heard myself say, the words coming out before I could stop them.
