I was only fifteen years old when I found out I had a gift.
A very rare gift indeed.
Only one in every thousand dragon riders, or so I’m told, has what they call a silver bond.
At first, I thought it was just a myth.
Something they told young dragons and riders to inspire them, to make them practice harder.
Until it happened to me.
The day my gift showed itself, I was training with the other young riders in the arena.
I was sweating profusely, and my muscles were screaming in agony.
Just when I thought I couldn’t take anymore, that I would collapse from exhaustion, everything went quiet.
My senses heightened as I felt this surge of power flow through my body.
It was like my veins were filled with liquid fire as it coursed through me.
The surge of power grew stronger, and I felt my body begin to shake.
My hands were trembling, and I was frozen in place, unable to move.
It was as if I was having some sort of vision, but it wasn’t just a vision.
It was more than that.
It was like I was seeing everything through the eyes of another creature.
I saw myself soaring through the clouds, hunting prey, nesting in mountain caves.
But these weren’t my memories.
They were someone else’s.
I heard a high-pitched chirp in the distance, and I turned my head to see a small dragon staring at me intently.
Her crystal tail was glowing with an otherworldly silver light, and I could feel her thoughts inside my head.
She was scared, but she was also curious.
She wanted to know what this strange new connection meant, and so did I.
I took a step forward, reaching out a shaky hand towards her.
She didn’t flinch or back away, just kept watching me with those big, round eyes. When my fingers finally made contact with her scales, it was like a dam had burst inside my mind.
Suddenly, I could hear her thoughts as clearly as if they were my own.
She was excited and nervous all at once, unsure of what to make of this sudden bond between us.
But she knew that it was something special, something that could change everything for both of us.
I stand in the center of the training arena, my heart pounding in my chest.
Zippy is circling me, chirping excitedly as she goes.
Her crystal tail is glowing with energy, pulsing in time with my own racing heartbeat.
"First, you need to secure the basic leather harness around your dragon’s chest," Nyx says, her voice calm and steady as she watches from the sidelines.
"Make sure all the straps are tight and secure. You don’t want anything coming loose while you’re flying."
I nod, taking a deep breath as I reach for the harness.
My hands are shaking slightly as I work to buckle it into place around Zippy’s chest.
She fidgets impatiently beneath my touch, eager to get into the air. Once the harness is secure, I step back and look at Zippy.
She’s beautiful, with shimmering silver scales that catch the light just right.
Her wings are strong and broad, perfect for carrying us both through the skies.
"Next, you need to get on your dragon’s back," Nyx continues, walking over to where I’m standing.
"Make sure you have a good grip on the handholds and that your legs are securely positioned on either side of your dragon."
I swallow hard, trying to push down the nerves that are threatening to overwhelm me.
I’ve done this before, but it never gets any easier.
I reach out and grip the handholds on Zippy’s back, feeling her muscles tense beneath me as I swing myself up onto her back. The other young riders are watching from the sidelines, their faces filled with a mix of excitement and envy.
Delilah gives me a nod of encouragement as I settle into position on Zippy’s back.
She knows how much this means to me, and she wants nothing more than for me to succeed.
"Are you ready?" she asks, her voice filled with anticipation.
I take a deep breath and nod my head.
"Yes," I say, trying to sound calmer than I feel inside.
Zippy shifts beneath me, her wings spreading wide as she prepares for takeoff.
I tighten my grip on the handholds as she tenses, her muscles coiling in preparation for the sudden burst of speed.
But just as she’s about to launch into the air, her head jerks forward and she lets out a massive sneeze.
The sound of it is like thunder, echoing off the walls of the arena.
And then, something strange happens.
A cloud of shimmering, crystal-like particles erupts from Zippy’s mouth, filling the air with a glittering mist.
They float and dance around us, catching the light and sending tiny rainbows scattering across the ground.
The other riders gasp in surprise, stepping back from the spectacle.
Nyx moves forward, her eyes wide with wonder as she examines the glittering cloud.
"Zippy?"
I say, confusion and concern etched on my face.
"What’s going on?"
Zippy sneezes again, and another burst of crystals shoots into the air.
This time, they’re even more vibrant than before, shimmering with a light that seems almost magical. The other riders watch in awe as the crystals drift lazily through the air, settling slowly to the ground like delicate snowflakes.
Delilah reaches out a hand, trying to catch some of them as they fall.
"I’ve never seen anything like this," she whispers, her voice filled with wonder.
Zippy shakes her head vigorously, sending more crystals flying in all directions.
She sneezes once more, and this time the cloud of glittering particles is even larger than before.
It’s as if she’s creating her own personal storm right here in the arena.
Through our bond, I can feel Zippy’s confusion mixed with embarrassment at this sudden turn of events.
"Nyx, what does this mean?" I ask, my voice tinged with both curiosity and worry.
Nyx steps closer, her eyes narrowing as she studies the shimmering particles.
"This is the mark of a true silver bond," she says softly, awe evident in her tone.
