I was Marky Markkk, the white male rapper, driving myself to the emergency room.
I was having a severe asthma attack and I drove myself because I didn’t want to do an ambulance ride and get a huge bill.
I was afraid I might die before the ambulance got here and I didn’t want that.
So I got myself in my car and drove myself to the emergency room.
Luckily, I was at a hotel just a block away from the hospital.
As I pulled up, I could see the emergency room doors opening as someone else’s car drove up and parked.
I quickly parked my car and locked it before walking towards the emergency room doors.
Before I got there, one of the emergency room workers opened the door for me with a smile.
"Hello, welcome to the emergency room. Can you sign in for me please?"
They asked politely.
"Thank you… Yes… Here."
I handed them my insurance card after signing in on their clipboard.
They quickly took it from me and started typing away on their computer before handing me a mask to put on over my mouth and nose.
"Have a seat, the triage nurse will be right with you."
They told me with a smile before disappearing behind their counter.
I sat down in the first open chair I saw and put my mask on over my mouth and nose to try and calm my breathing a bit before the triage nurse came over to me.
Within two minutes, the triage nurse came over to me with a wheelchair.
I nodded as I watched the triage nurse come over to me.
She was a tall, thin woman with long black hair and black framed glasses on her face.
She was wearing a black hospital uniform with a badge that read "Nurse Helena Ravenwood" on it.
She had a calm demeanor about her as she came over to me.
"Hello, my name is Nurse Helena Ravenwood. I am the triage nurse here. Can you please stand up for me?"
She asked me calmly.
I stood up for her and she put her hand on my shoulder before leading me to the treatment area.
I could hear my breathing being labored as I walked behind her.
It was hard to breathe and I was having trouble catching my breath.
We stopped at one of the rooms and Nurse Ravenwood wheeled a wheelchair in front of me.
"Please sit down," she said calmly.
I sat down in the wheelchair and Nurse Ravenwood wheeled me into the room.
As we entered the room, I saw Dr. Eliza Blackwood standing there waiting for us.
She was wearing black framed glasses and a black hospital uniform with a badge that read "Dr. Eliza Blackwood" on it.
She was a tall, thin woman with long black hair tied back in a ponytail.
She had a stethoscope around her neck and was holding a black binder with medical paperwork in it. "Hello, I am Dr. Eliza Blackwood," she said calmly as Nurse Ravenwood wheeled me into the room.
"I will be taking care of you today."
Nurse Ravenwood wheeled me over to the bed and I got up off the wheelchair and onto the bed.
Nurse Ravenwood took my vitals before leaving the room to get some oxygen for me.
Dr. Blackwood started asking me questions about my breathing as Nurse Ravenwood came back into the room with an oxygen tank and a non-rebreather mask hooked up to it.
Dr. Blackwood took the non-rebreather mask from Nurse Ravenwood and put it over my mouth and nose so I could get some oxygen into my lungs.
The oxygen felt good going into my lungs as I breathed in deeply through the mask.
"Marky Markkk, is it?" Dr. Blackwood asked, glancing at the chart.
"Yeah, that's me," I replied, trying to catch my breath.
"Your asthma's acting up because of stress, isn't it? Something happened before you got here?" she inquired, her eyes narrowing with concern.
I nodded, the rhythmic hiss of the oxygen filling the air.
"Yeah, had a rough show tonight."
I admitted, my voice strained.
Dr. Blackwood nodded sympathetically, scribbling some notes in her black binder.
"Okay, we'll get you settled in and on some meds to help with that. Nurse Ravenwood will get your pulse and blood pressure."
She instructed, glancing at her colleague.
Nurse Ravenwood nodded, her fingers deftly wrapping around my wrist to check my pulse.
The coolness of her touch was a welcome respite from the heat of my labored breathing.
After a moment, she released my wrist and jotted down some numbers on the chart.
"Let's get started on your treatment," Dr. Blackwood said, reaching for a bag that Nurse Ravenwood had brought in.
Inside was a duo nebulizer treatment.
Dr. Blackwood hooked it up to an oxygen tank and turned it on before placing the mask over my mouth and nose again.
I closed my eyes, focusing on the cool mist as it enveloped me.
The medication began to work its way through my lungs, calming the tightness that had been plaguing me since I got here.
As the treatment finished, I opened my eyes to find Dr. Blackwood watching me closely.
Her brow furrowed as she noticed my breathing was still labored.
"We need to escalate the treatment," she said firmly, her eyes locked on mine.
She signaled to Nurse Ravenwood, who nodded and began setting up the CPAP ventilator machine.
The room buzzed with a sense of urgency as they worked together, their movements fluid and practiced.
Nurse Ravenwood adjusted the settings on the machine before gently placing the mask over my mouth and nose again.
"Okay, Marky Markkk, just breathe in deeply and slowly through your mouth. The machine will do the rest," she instructed softly.
I nodded, feeling a bit apprehensive about the pressure from the CPAP.
But I knew I needed it.
I took a deep breath in through my mouth, feeling the cool air rush into my lungs.
The pressure from the CPAP was intense, but I focused on my breathing, trying to relax and let the machine do its job. Dr. Blackwood watched me closely, her eyes darting between me and the monitors that beeped steadily behind me.
Her gaze was intense, her brow furrowed in concern as she monitored my vitals.
"Marky, I need to ask—has anything else been bothering you lately?" Dr. Blackwood's voice was gentle but probing.
I hesitated, then nodded slightly. "Yeah, it's just... my manager's pushing me hard, and I don't know if I can keep up."
Dr. Blackwood exchanged a glance with Nurse Ravenwood, who nodded knowingly.
"Okay, we'll get you settled in and on some meds to help with that. Nurse Ravenwood will get your pulse and blood pressure."
Dr. Blackwood instructed, glancing at her colleague.
Nurse Ravenwood nodded, her fingers deftly wrapping around my wrist to check my pulse.
The rhythmic beeps of the machines filled the air as I lay there, the CPAP humming softly beside me.
Suddenly, I felt a tightening in my chest.
My breaths became shallow and rapid, panic rising as the air seemed to thin around me.
Nurse Ravenwood's eyes widened as she noticed my distress.
"Dr. Blackwood!" she called out urgently.
Dr. Blackwood rushed over, her fingers moving deftly over the CPAP controls.
"Stay with us, Marky," she urged, her voice firm yet soothing.
The CPAP machine let out a loud, jarring alarm, sending a jolt of panic through me.
I struggled to breathe, my lungs feeling like they were on fire.
Dr. Blackwood's eyes locked onto the machine, her hands moving swiftly to silence the alarm.
"Marky, we need to switch to a different setting," she said calmly, her voice steady amidst the chaos.
Nurse Ravenwood was at my side in an instant, her hands adjusting the mask and oxygen flow.
The room buzzed with activity as the medical team worked together to stabilize me.
I focused on Dr. Blackwood's voice, her words of reassurance my lifeline as I struggled for air.
Then, just as suddenly as it had started, the tightening in my chest began to ease.
My breaths slowed, my panic subsiding as the oxygen flowed more freely once again.
Dr. Blackwood's eyes locked on mine, her gaze filled with relief.
"Marky, you're going to be okay," she said softly.
The room seemed to settle around us, the machines beeping steadily in the background.
I took a deep breath, the cool air filling my lungs once again.
As I lay there, Nurse Ravenwood's words echoed in my mind— "we've got this."
The medical team had saved me from the brink of disaster, and for that I was eternally grateful.
I closed my eyes, feeling a sense of peace wash over me.
