I'm not like the others.
I'm not a boy coming from a rich family.
But I still go to the same private school they do.
The only difference is that my mother is the principal of the school, so I don't have to pay the monthly tuition fee.
I never was one of them, and I know that Nia likes to know that I don't come from the same place as them; she likes to know that I'm not like the others.
I mean, she was my best friend, or at least that was what I thought.
But now, after what I did with her boyfriend, I don't know if we can still be friends.
I mean, I slept with Ethan.
Nia's boyfriend.
And now he doesn't know if he likes girls or boys.
Thanks to me.
Fuck!I just can't believe that I did that!
When I saw him there those nights, I just wanted to talk to him and be his friend, because Nia wasn't letting me be close to her anymore.
The Queen's Game
But he was so cute and hot, and he was looking at me with those green eyes of his, and I just couldn't resist.
I know it was wrong, but I'm a gay boy, and I've been in love with him since the first day I saw him in our school.
And now...
Now he doesn't know if he likes girls or boys.
And Nia hates me.
And Ethan...
He's just gone.
I see him sometimes in the school corridors, but he doesn't even look at me.
It's like I don't exist for him.
Like I never existed.
But today...
Today I saw Nia sitting alone in the courtyard during lunch break.
The Queen's Game
She had her designer bag beside her on the stone bench, and she was eating a sandwich while staring at her phone screen.
I remember that when we were friends, she used to save this spot for us to eat together. My hands are trembling as I walk toward her, my heart beating fast in my chest.
I don't know why, but I feel like this is my last chance to fix things between us, to make her forgive me and be friends again.
She notices me approaching from the corner of her eye, but she doesn't move or look at me; she just keeps staring at her phone with deliberate intensity.
I sit beside her on the bench without asking permission, keeping a careful distance between us.
I've been rehearsing what to say to her all morning, but now that I'm here in front of her, everything is stuck in my throat.
"Nia..."
My voice comes out smaller than I intended it to.
"I... I need to talk to you."
She doesn't answer or even look at me; she just keeps eating her sandwich and staring at her phone screen.
"Nia..."
I try again, louder this time.
"Please."
The Queen's Game
She sighs and sets her phone face-down on the bench, but still doesn't look at me.
I slide a little more to the side, trying to keep a safe distance between us.
The autumn breeze blows through the courtyard's maple trees, scattering red leaves across our feet.
I clear my throat and try to find the right words to say to her.
"I miss you," I manage to whisper.
The words hang in the air between us, and I watch as she takes a deep breath before answering.
"I miss you too."
Her manicured fingers stop mid-scroll on her phone screen, and her perfectly lined eyes narrow slightly as she turns to look at me.
"You miss me?" she says, her voice tinged with disbelief.
"After what you did, you think that's enough?"
I swallow hard, feeling the weight of her words.
The Queen's Game
I lean forward, resting my elbows on my knees and gripping the stone bench's edge with cold hands.
The courtyard slowly empties as other students head to their next class, leaving just Nia and me sitting in an uncomfortable silence.
I take a deep breath before I finally speak.
"I know it's not enough, but I'm willing to do anything to make it right."
Nia scoffs and picks up her designer bag from the bench, her perfectly manicured fingers trembling slightly.
She stands, smoothing her skirt with a practiced hand, and looks down at me with a mix of hurt and contemplation.
After what feels like an eternity, she pulls out her phone from her bag and types something on the screen before walking away, the clicking of her heels echoing across the empty courtyard.
